· reading: students will read texts of various types (novels, short stories, poetry, newspaper and magazine articles, etc.). Students should also practice independent reading for 30 minutes daily.
· writing: students will learn to write in a variety of styles, to edit and revise their work using standard grammar, and to expand their vocabulary.
· language (oral communication): students will improve their public speaking and listening skills by participating in group activities, presentations, and speeches.
Assignments will be based on the Common Core State Standards (CCSS) for English/Language Arts, including the Springboard workbook.
“Character Counts!” is a Mililani School Complex-wide program that encourages students to choose behavior that follows the “Six Pillars” of good character: Respect, Trustworthiness, Fairness, Responsibility, Caring and Citizenship.
If students choose to not follow the six pillars, they will be counseled by the teacher, counselor, and/or parents/ guardians; be given a behavior reflection; or be referred to a counselor or administrator.
Grades for individual assignments are based on how well a student has met the standard for that particular assignment. CCSS/Springboard rubrics will be used to grade students' performance on assignments:
Advanced/ Exemplary
Proficient/Proficient
Partially proficient/ Emerging
Novice/ Incomplete
Assignment grades will be combined into a letter grade at the end of each quarter:
A= 100-90%; B= 89-80%; C= 79-70%; D= 69-60%; F= 59-0%
The purpose of grading based on achievement of CCSS is to help students perform all standards at grade level. This is why students may re-do an assignment ONCE (except for summatives) if they are not satisfied with the grade they received on an assignment. If a student corrects an assignment that was originally a "B", they could then receive a grade of "A". If a student corrects an assignment that was originally a "C", "D", or "F", they could then receive a grade of "B". If an assignment is turned in late, the highest grade it can receive is a "B". Missing work will equal "0" and will lower the overall grade.
If a student has not been absent, they will have a one-week grace period to turn in the assignment.
Students can see the list of assignments on Google Classroom, or on Mrs. Wong's "Absent Work" . If they have any questions, they can ask the teacher during class, or email at carole.wong@k12.hi.us .
