Dear Milan Elementary Families,
As we move into the holiday season, our students continue to show tremendous growth in both academics and leadership. This month, classrooms are focusing on PBS expectations and reinforcing positive behaviors across our building. Students are also continuing their work with Leader in Me (LIM), including setting personal and academic goals and tracking their progress toward meeting them.
We are also continuing to deepen our understanding of Standards-Based Grading, which provides clearer feedback on what students know and are able to do. Thank you for partnering with us as we use this system to better support student learning and growth.
With colder weather arriving, please ensure that students come dressed appropriately for the temperature. Coats, hats, and gloves are important for outdoor recess. We also ask that you label all coats, jackets, and cold-weather items with your child’s name to help us return lost items more easily.
As winter approaches, please be aware that in the event of hazardous weather, we may utilize an AMI (Alternative Methods of Instruction) day. If you need assistance with internet access at home, please notify your child’s teacher. We have mobile hotspots available for checkout to support student learning during AMI days.
Please remember that school will be in session on November 24th and 25th. We will then break for the holiday, and school will resume on December 2nd.
We are excited to invite you to our Christmas Concert on December 11th. The evening will begin with Preschool performing at 5:45 PM in the Elementary Gym. We look forward to celebrating our students’ hard work and talent.
Thank you for your continued support of our school community. We hope you have a warm and joyful November!
With Wildcat Pride,
Mrs. Hoerrmann
Elementary Principal
As a reminder, students must earn eligibility to attend our PBS and STAR celebrations each quarter. These celebrations are designed to recognize students for positive behavior, strong effort, and academic growth.
PBS Celebration – December 17
Students who remain referral-free during the 2nd quarter will celebrate by attending a special school trip to the Brookfield Movie Theater on December 17.
Students who are not eligible will remain on campus and complete activities with staff.
STAR Reading Celebration – December 19
Students who have met their STAR Reading goal for the quarter will celebrate on December 19 by watching a movie in the elementary gym. Concessions will be available for purchase.
Students who do not meet their goal will remain in their classrooms and continue working on reading skills.
What Is STAR Reading?
The STAR Reading Assessment is a computer-based test that helps teachers measure each student’s reading level, track their progress, and set individualized reading goals. Students take STAR multiple times throughout the year so teachers can monitor growth and adjust instruction to meet their needs. Goals are personalized for each student based on their previous performance, ensuring that every child is working toward appropriate and attainable growth.
Leader in Me is a schoolwide program that helps students develop leadership and life skills. It’s based on The 7 Habits of Highly Effective People by Stephen Covey, but adapted for children in age-appropriate ways.
Instead of focusing only on academics, Leader in Me helps schools build a culture where every child is seen as a leader—someone who can make good choices, work well with others, and take responsibility.
Leader in Me aims to help students:
Build confidence and a positive self-image
Take responsibility for their learning and behavior
Set and work toward goals
Develop social-emotional skills
Build strong relationships and teamwork
Develop problem-solving and critical-thinking skills
Be Proactive
I am in charge of me.
Students learn to take responsibility for their actions, attitudes, and choices.
Begin With the End in Mind
Have a plan.
Children practice setting goals and thinking ahead.
Put First Things First
Work first, then play.
Students learn time-management and prioritizing.
Think Win-Win
Everyone can win.
Kids learn cooperation, fairness, and finding solutions that help everyone.
Seek First to Understand, Then to Be Understood
Listen before you talk.
Students practice active listening and empathy.
Synergize
Together is better.
Children learn teamwork and appreciate others’ strengths.
Sharpen the Saw
Take care of yourself.
Students learn healthy habits for body, mind, and emotions.
Depending on the school, you might see:
Classroom goal-setting boards
Student leadership roles (e.g., greeter, tech helper, line leader)
Student-led conferences
“Leadership notebooks” tracking goals and progress
School-wide leadership events
Lessons on the 7 Habits during class meetings
The goal is for leadership to become part of everyday routines—not just a separate lesson.
You don’t have to formally “teach” the habits—just reinforce them in simple ways:
Use habit language: “What’s your plan?” “Can we think win-win?”
Let children take age-appropriate responsibility
Set family goals together
Use a simple daily or weekly planner
Encourage teamwork and empathy between siblings
Model healthy habits like rest, reading, or staying organized
Parents typically appreciate that the program:
Builds confidence
Helps children become more organized
Improves communication skills
Strengthens emotional intelligence
Encourages positive behavior instead of punishment
Creates a common language between home and school
