My profile
Varuna Rampare (PGCE P/T – 2021 – Art & Design)
I am Varuna Rampare and I am an art educator. I was born in Mauritius and studied Fine Arts at the UOM, MGI. After completing my Bachelor degree, I joined a secondary school as an Art and Design Educator in 2017. I then joined the part-time PGCE course at the MIE in 2020. Teaching to develop my students’ creativity in parallel with mine has become one of my passions. I have always been engaged in painting, sculpture, installation and photography. Art brings me peace and offers the moment to meditate on the beauty in people, in the world and the grace in living a human life. My highest goal is to convey the same peace and grace to everyone and to acquire as many technical skills as I can while exploring Art and developing my creativity which I believe has no boundary.
CONCEPT: Standpoint
Reaching 30’s has been considered as a crucial stage in human life, as at this point we are the ones taking the rein of our life into our hands. This undoubtedly brings lots of questions and answers in regards to how fellow human beings in our surroundings act or react, leaving a big impact on our own life decision making process.
Analysing how human beings behave in order to make their own life an easy one, I came across some interesting ideas, showing how the decision-making process varies from people to people, yet can be regrouped in certain patterns. Even though everyone is living a completely different life, yet everyone functions in their own perspective. I have developed these three works to demonstrate my own standpoint on self and on people around me.

As we all know, as time passes, so does the culture of life itself. Newer technology is developed, different trends come and go and even the current economic system are all things that have an impact on the current situation. It is because these changes between different generations create a lack of understanding between them. It's easy to say that “kids these days do not know this, or know this: or that people older than you “do not understand” when you are not willing to take time to learn their perspective beyond what you can see.
What if we try to change our views and adapt or modify our lifestyle together with the new generation? In this painting I am showing myself in a green environment without technology and also an elder version of myself in a modern environment in the same painting, showing even though one is from another generation, he or she can still follow the new trends.

A Japanese theory states that it is an undeniable reality that every person creates three completely different personalities and use them accordingly to the situation they are in. Being alone, we act in a certain way, while in public the same person may react in another different way or while with our trusted ones, we use another way of reacting.
As an artist, I decided to develop this concept by sculpting three self-portraits, showing how I have to adapt and change my personality in accordance to what situation I am in, just like using masks. A happy one in certain situations, or rather a fierce one in others. To show this idea, I have chosen a calm self-portrait expression with closed eyes supported with two different expressions

Living in a multi-cultural society, we constantly intermix with other people, creating all sorts of situations with all sorts of behaviours. As every person is different in every way and thinks differently, we often come across situations where we cannot speak openly, hence we tend to bend, hide our emotions, and keep things untold so that it does not hurt the other person. Also, things that stay when a person leaves or dies, are only the memories of the person but their real self remains hidden. From my “Standpoint” we should always surround ourselves with people who would allow us to always express ourselves. We should also feel free and confident to speak out without the fear of leaving “Untold”.

My Overall Reflection
The journey of Subject Didactics has reformed me not only as an educator but also as an individual by offering different opportunities of reflecting on myself as well as on my students. It has been a journey where I have been able to discover and learn about innovative and effective teaching strategies. This module has enabled me to perform as an effective 21st-century educator and to accomplish the NCF goals. Learning how to design a well-structured lesson plan with learning objectives has helped me to become more confident while teaching. I have been able to find strategies to motivate myself in teaching as well as increase my learners’ interest in learning in line with the National Curriculum Framework, Ministry of Education and Human Resources, Tertiary Education and Scientific Research, 2017; Cambridge Assessment International Education, 2019. Moreover, the module has moulded me to design and implement inclusive and active learning for my students after investigating their backgrounds. Implementing a more holistic and caring attitude in teaching Art and Design is one of the most important keys to consider (Walker, 2010; Marshman, 2010).
Undeniably, I have been flourished during Subject Didactics modules, in which I have made introversion on my own teaching career. I succeeded in recognising my own personal challenges which were the opportunities to learn and grow. I also learnt about the fundamental part of the hidden curriculum that should always be considered, as they play a great role in teaching and learning. Overall, I improved my plan of teaching with different elements and strategies by implementing ICT in teaching which is still helping me with my online classes.
