My profile
Soodhoo Priyanka (PGCE P/T 2020 – 2021 – Art & Design)
I am Priyanka Soodhoo, Art and Design educator. Growing up as a passionate of art is not easy; what initially seems to be a passion, quickly turns into an amalgam of stress, happiness, sadness, confusion.... imposed upon us by the education system. Most teachers, using their position, and knowledge as a tool, persuade young students through teaching, in fact pushing us, to walk the pre-defined path to secure recognition as an artist in society. As a result, we are only trying to please them in the hope to achieve the said status. Undoubtedly during this journey, we are introduced to an ocean of art knowledge and taught the various techniques thereby helping us explore and find our preferred area.
CONCEPT: A subjective Experience: Emotions
It is imperative to understand that many of us cannot communicate freely due to social barriers; we do not want to hurt anyone’s feelings though at times it may happen unintentionally (Cialdini, Reno, & Kallgren, 1990; Deutsch & Gerard, 1955). This is mainly due to the fact that, since our early age, we are taught to abide by the laws and social norms present in societies to blend in (Cialdini et al., 1990,). Hence, many of us, choose a platform to convey hidden messages that otherwise should have been left unsaid.
As an artist, I have the possibility to reach out to the audience, and hence, the purpose of this profile is to provide an overview of my own agenda in using my artworks as a medium of communication.
My own concept about "Emotions" artworks is to let the audience decide what it means for them personally. If they are able to relate and connect, according to their own state of mind and feelings, then I will consider myself successful. If ever they do not connect and have a negative feeling, here also I achieve what I wanted: they felt something, not necessarily what I felt, but their own feeling. Somehow, we are connecting through emotions, and most importantly, emotions that are not imposed upon oneself.

I prefer to engage in a casual conversation about emotions rather than imposing or transmitting the same onto my audience. To submerge is to go down or sink. Here, I’m sinking in an unknown feeling when I feel despair. As per the research, lying postures are significant as they reflect our state of mind (overthink, sad, chill) and characters. Hence, to submerge is to cage myself, create a sense of suffocation in my own thoughts and feelings that no one has access to, which is highly personal and intimate. Indeed, the choice of half-covered in water conveys the despair and the struggle of accepting negative emotions. The overkill of her distress, release a negative feeling from her thus bleeding emotionally – the black spill from her body is symbolical.
My Artwork - Sculpture

The creation of a work of art is the bringing about of a new combination of elements in the medium. Raising social awareness, fighting injustice, climate change, prejudices through their artworks, lead viewers to see the reality of things. Metamorphosis, a change of physical form. In that same sense, my artwork three is depicting the self in her most vulnerable state but acknowledge her negative emotions. A bit dramatic, with the intention to accept feeling sad, desperate and all. Here, the concept takes a philosophical dimension to converse with the viewers, touching upon their emotions. When we ignore our feelings, it creates a ‘boomerang’ effect where the emotions will just come back later, and sometimes even stronger than they were before. Allowing ourselves to feel what we are feeling help us move forward instead of getting stuck. The butterflies are to remind us of the metamorphosis of an ugly caterpillar turning into a beautiful butterfly. By adding them next to a weak person, also shows hope. It is a choice and behaviour that I adopted as an individual to inculcate courage and confidence. It is also true; many people give up during different phases of life. I, personally cannot remain insensitive when a person experiences similar challenges in their life.

My Final Reflection
The activity encourages cooperative learning among peers and teachers forging into positive relationship that is fundamental for an academic community to value diversity. It brings recognition of my student’s hard work and talent which brings them more proposals, prizes, exhibitions and openings. This encouragement leads them to major in the art field who later on successfully became educators, art director, animation artist, graphic designer, curator and medical illustrator amongst others. In most cases, it’s the parents that decide the future of the kid. Henceforth, this serves as an exemplary for parents to be more open minded realizing their child desire to pursue their studies in Art & Design. Besides, it is very usual for slow learners to opt for Art & Design as they think that it is easy to get a passing mark in the subject. Consequently, it is my concern to enlighten the significance of art in my classroom but also informed about the unseen demerits, hard work and perseverance relating to the subject. It requires lots of art involvements such as visiting of gallery and attending exhibitions to underline the notion that I convey. Along with the necessity to prepare my pupils with knowledge indispensable to produce a quality work of art for them to discipline, focus, grow, observe and learn. Further to that, it is more professional for an educator to be involved in PTA’s, workshops and seminars, as such, up to date with contemporary change in education.
