Vanessa Laura Baillache (PGCE P/T – 2021 – Art & Design)
My name is Vanessa Laura Baillache Art and Design educator. For me, it was really important to illustrate what were the different emotions that we all felt during the covid 19 pandemic through a piece of art. I wanted to show how life has become since then: life has become abstract and full of uncertainties and incomprehension and the future is quite unclear. I wanted to show the trauma that we went through at the beginning when it all started.
CONCEPT: Anguish
My theme ‘Anguish’ is about the covid 19 Pandemic. I could not think about a better theme than this one simply because I strongly feel that everyone will be able to relate to it in a certain way. I still can’t believe how much our lives have changed since the arrival of the virus and how things are never going to be the same again.
Rushing to the supermarkets because we feared that there might be a shortage of food, seeing everyone around losing their mind with the panic buying. It really felt like an ‘apocalyptic’ image.
Moreover, the confinement which was decided abruptly on one day for the next was I believe quite unfair as people were not prepared at all for that. It was really sad for the people who did not have all the basic necessities during this period of confinement. The stress of not knowing what was going to happen was quite difficult to manage. In fact, to be enclosed in the same place for a long period of time can cause a lot of anxiety. There was also a lot of pressure that teachers had to deal with which was not easy, we had the feeling that if we did not do the vaccine, we would not be able to work and might even lose our jobs. I felt like we were trapped not only by the virus but also trapped in a society where we are losing trust, where we were becoming suspicious about the decisions which were being taken. To conclude I must say that yes, I am afraid of the coronavirus but I must admit that I am even more afraid of human beings' behaviours, decisions and lack of discernment.
My Artworks - Painting
Technique: Painting - Acrylic on canvas
Dimensions: 80 cms X 60 cms
Through this artwork, I wanted to show the isolation at home, how much it was unexpected and difficult for some people. For those who live alone and for whom moral support comes from their friends or family who they were not able to see. There are also the individuals for whom going to work is a refuge where they can breathe and have some tranquillity simply because of the fact that they are avoiding the troubles at home. During these times of lockdown, many people were trapped with a violent partner or parent. Therefore, many persons had to face all these things they were trying to avoid.
Furthermore, many employees had to try their best to work online while their kids were asking for attention. It really was not easy for all these people to manage the work online and also the studies of their children at home, some even had to share only one laptop for the whole family. For those who used to visit their grand-parents and bring food because they lived alone and needed help, it was very stressful to know that you can’t go and visit your family to give them the support they needed.
The people who live in a small house or apartment and who could not go outside in the garden to breathe some fresh air, and those people who kept listening to all the bad news on social media or on the tv had to deal with a lot of stress and anguish. We were thus trapped between the walls of our house like birds stuck in a cage who want to go out but can’t.
My Artworks - My Sculpture
Technique: Assemblage with scrap materials
Dimensions: 93 cms x 50 cms x 45 cms
The final work shows a human figure who is trapped in a box. The box symbolizes all these emotions and problems that are affecting us. Trapped in a society where we don’t have control over the decisions which are being taken concerning the covid 19.
With my sculpture, I wanted to show that we humans are trapped in this problem which is the coronavirus and its show its consequences. In fact, we are trapped in our anxiety and fear of not knowing what is going to happen concerning our life, health and job. Some people have become jobless since the beginning of the covid 19. Many persons while being in confinement and in isolation had to deal with depression because they had to live alone or were far away from their loved ones. Other people who had certain routines and habits like for instance going to the gym or going to a sport session, were force to stay at home and this situation caused a lot of people to loose motivation and gained weight. Moreover, artists such as musicians, singers and dancers were not able to work during the lockdown and this continued for many of them even during the post lockdown period. I felt downhearted to see such talented individuals having difficulties to earn a living like everyone else.
I wanted to express the anxiety we went through with the consent form and the vaccin. Although it was not imposed on us, the government passed regulations to prevent some employees of the public sector to have access to their workplace if they did not have their vaccination card. I think this is another form of ‘imposing your will’ on people and we did not deserved to be treated like that. All I know is that instead of copying what other countries did, we could have chosen to make a difference by being more human, and having more concern about the welfare of our citizens.
My Artworks - Installation
Technique: Mixed technique with wood, plaster and spray paint
Dimensions: 35 x 40 x 30cm and 52 x 50 x 30cm
Through this artwork, I wanted to show someone forced to be in isolation in a house. I wanted to represent the house with a box, a kind of an abstract box with sticks. The sticks are stopping the man from going out. He wants to escape from this situation and to have some freedom but he can’t. I preferred to represent the box with sticks placed in a chaotic way because I have never done that before and because I find it visually modern like that. I wanted to show the isolation at home, how much it was unexpected and difficult for some people. For those who live alone and for whom moral support comes from their friends or family who they were not able to see.
