My profile
Prarthna Ghoorah (PGCE P/T – 2021 – Art & Design)
My name is Prarthna Ghoorah and I am an art educator at Merton college. I am graduated from the university of Mauritius in 2018 with a bachelor’s degree in Fine Arts with specialization in painting. I love art because of its ability to express emotions, moods, and stories. Art was always my method of self-expression and creativity, creating a doorway for my imagination to explain its intricacies.
CONCEPT: Detachment
While many people feel excitement and relief about getting vaccinated and returning to “normal life” not everyone feels the same elation about reverting to previous patterns. There are many factors affecting the personal identity of the present generation in this pandemic, my concept is based on that. Through my brainstorming and research, I have done, I came across a lot of issues that may affect the present generation.
The older generation has experienced many challenges over the years, such as wars, social change, political upheaval, and many more. This might be the reason why they are often seen as less worried about the pandemic than their children and grandchildren, think that they should be. School closures have affected young people worldwide and significantly changed how they live and study. Moreover, learning at school is not only about what takes place in the classroom. It involves social gatherings which are an essential part of childhood development and can later influence socialization. One can therefore expect a decline in social skills among the young generation as a consequence of the pandemic, causing stress, anxiety and loneliness which not everyone can handle on their own. As a result, a significant increase in demand for psychological care should be expected, especially when we consider the critical role special interaction plays in social development and personal identity.
Adding to that it has been observed that it is also affecting youth’s normative development. Adolescence is the developmental stage when young people transform from children to adults. Several key processes unfold during this period, such as the advent of new cognitive capacities, neurobiological changes, and changes in social interactions with increasingly more time spent outside the family. They strike for more autonomy and try to construct a personal identity that will gradually help them navigate possible adult roles. All these essential characteristics of adolescence are severely threatened by the pandemic. To conclude, my artworks will be based on these issues that I have mentioned, focusing on the personal identity of the present generation.
My Artwork - Painting
Technique: Painting - Natural pigments-Coffee, Rustic Iron Pieces, Tea, Soil,
Dimensions: 31 cms X 41 cms
My painting is based on ‘emotions’. We are experiencing a number of different emotions in this pandemic. We feel the world has changed, and it has. We realize things will be different. We are feeling anticipatory grief, the feeling that we get about what the future holds when we’re uncertain. With viruses, this kind of grief is so confusing for people. Our primitive mind knows something bad is happening, but we can’t see it. This breaks our sense of safety. We are feeling that loss of safety.
My Artwork - My Sculpture
Technique: Assemblage - Wires, Threads, Aluminium foil

Being caged inside four walls, that’s what the whole world is actually experiencing, due to this pandemic, feeling of being trapped inside your own house. The boxes of wires represent, that people are being confined in their own house is restricted to outdoor activities, feeling sad, alone and depressed.
My Artwork - Woodprint
Technique: Woodprint - Tea, Coffee, Ink

This pandemic is not just about immediate physical health, it creates fears, stressors, or uncertainties around many different aspects of a person’s life, Life does go on, it may look different right now and it may take time to go back to the way it used to be. My print depicts how this virus has taken over the world and our daily life routine, making us feel uncertain if ever we’ll get back to our normal life, where even the little things would make us feel happy.

My Overall Reflection
Learning something new can be a scary experience that’s what I always think. However, after doing PGCE course, it completely changed my perception. Nowadays having a positive personal relationship is essential to all people as it is admittedly beneficial to academic, vocational and social aspects.
When studying in secondary school, I was a passive child. I did not realize the importance of communication. I was not willing to talk with people whom I never met before and I was not good at expressing myself so I had only a few social groups. After doing PGCE course, my social skills have slightly improved actually. I have learnt different communication skills such as willing to accept criticisms, and how communication leads to positive relationships. I also understand communication consists of listening and giving responses mutually. I try my best to apply these skills into our daily life.
