French I : 1130/2130 

1 credit 

A two-semester course intended for students taking French for the first time. The goal of the first year is to teach students basic conversation, classroom commands, vocabulary and culture. Students will have an introduction to the present tense. Students will learn skills through listening, writing, speaking and reading in the target language, as well as classroom games to master the fundamentals of French. Should a student enroll in this course, and the course does not run, the student will automatically be enrolled in French II.

French II : 1131/2131 

1 credit 

A two-semester course intended for students who have had some French education, took French in middle school, or have a teacher recommendation to enroll in French II. Students will master the present tense and have an introduction to the past tense. Students will learn skills through listening, writing, speaking and reading in the target language covering topics such as clothing and fashion, family and daily life, and recreational activities. Class instruction is conducted mostly in French.

French III : 1132/2132 

1 credit 

Prereq: French I and French II 

Recommended: French II grade of a C or better 

A two-semester course. Students engage with authentic language resources covering topics such as personal health, fairy tales, and trends in media. Students refine, practice and review grammar and composition skills including multiple forms of the past tense and comparative structures, and expressions of opinion. Class instruction is conducted mostly in French. 

French IV : 1133/2133 

1 credit 

Prereq: French I, II, & III 

Recommended: French III grade of a C or better 

A two-semester course. Students continue to improve language skills through engaging with authentic resources. Throughout the year students will read, watch, discuss, and write about world travel, art, and education, among other topics. Students will learn to express ideas of the future and conditional events, complex grammatical structures, and expressions of subjective realities. 90%+ of class work is conducted in French. 

French V : 1433/2433 

1 credit 

Prereq:  French I, II, III, & IV 

Recommended:  French IV grade of a B or better 

This two-semester course is designed to parallel the skill development of a third-semester college French course in advanced composition and conversation. Students improve their mastery of listening, speaking, reading and writing skills through the study of the arts, human nature, global issues, and current events. Activities may include viewing feature films, researching current publications on class subjects from French-language news, and conversing with guest speakers. Students must be highly motivated, have strong interests in French and be willing to meet a demanding standard of accomplishment. Successful completion of this course will better prepare students for college-level material and allow them to proceed with greater confidence.

Spanish I : 1135/2135 

1 credit 

9th, 10th, 11th, 12th 

A two-semester course intended for students as a foundation and preparation for Spanish II.  Students will learn basic conversational Spanish and basic grammar through listening, learning about culture, reading, speaking and presenting different aspects of the Spanish language within the Spanish I level.  Vocabulary and grammar are taught in thematic units of school, activities for life, family, food, likes and dislikes, the environment, and skills needed for Spanish II. The class will be conducted in 75% Spanish moving to all Spanish by 2nd Semester.

Spanish II : 1136/2136 

1 credit 

Prereq: Spanish I 

Recommended: MS teacher recommendation or 9th Graders 

A two-semester course.  The second year focuses on refining present and past tenses in conversation, reading and writing.  Emphasis is on the building of proficiency in speaking with grammar and vocabulary through the use of thematic units. Students have the opportunity to learn more about the culture of the Spanish-speaking world through the use of authentic texts, films and realia. Students will be able to discuss their thoughts and experiences through spoken and written language in the present and past tenses. Class is conducted in 90%+ Spanish.

Spanish III : 1137/2137 

1 credit 

Prereq: Spanish I and Spanish II 

A two-semester course.  Conversation is stressed throughout the year, with added emphasis on extended reading and writing. Previously learned grammar is reviewed and new grammatical structures are introduced in preparation for upper level Spanish courses, as well as language use outside of the classroom.  Students will learn about historical, social and cultural issues of the Spanish speaking world through the use of authentic texts, films and realia.  Students will focus on the use of Spanish in real world contexts. Students are eligible to travel with the Spanish Club during Spring break with trips taken every other year.  Classwork is conducted in Spanish.

Spanish IV : 1138/2138 

1 credit 

Prereq: Spanish I, II, & III 

A two-semester course. Students will learn about and discuss current issues, history, and geography of the Spanish speaking world in comparison with the United States by interacting with authentic resources and media.  Focus is on the improvement of speaking, listening, reading, and writing skills.  Students will read and discuss novels in Spanish as they revolve around the central themes and issues presented in class. Incontext conversation in the target language is a main focus along with an overview of previously learned vocabulary and grammatical structures.  Classwork is conducted in Spanish. Students are eligible to travel with the Spanish Club during Spring Break every other year. 

Spanish V : 1434/2434 

1 credit 

Prereq:  Spanish I, II, III, & IV 

Spanish V is a two-semester course that focuses on strengthening students' listening, speaking, reading, and writing skills through the study of the arts, history, literature, culture, and current events. Students must be highly motivated, have a strong interest in Spanish, and be willing to meet a demanding standard of accomplishment. Eligible and interested students may choose to opt into the dual-credit version of this course (CAPP Spanish V) that is offered in conjunction with the University of Wisconsin Oshkosh and mirrors their fourth semester Spanish 204 course. Students who complete CAPP Spanish V will receive up to 16 University of Wisconsin Oshkosh credits in addition to MHHS credit.
