This hands-on class is for students who are interested in a variety of different art techniques and mediums, such as drawing, painting, printmaking, sculpture and ceramics. Within each unit, students learn new art concepts in relation to the art elements and principles, new techniques and about both historical and contemporary artists related to those techniques. Students engage in in-class studies (mini projects) and long term projects, as well as keep a weekly creative sketchbook. Art I is a prerequisite for Art II, Drawing, Painting and Printmaking courses.
In this course students will:
Learn more about basic techniques when creating both 2D and 3D projects; such as portrait drawing, painting, paper mache sculpture and relief printmaking
Increase self-confidence and creativity
Develop a greater understanding and appreciation for art related topics

This hands-on class is a great way for students to try a lot of different art mediums and techniques. Projects range from drawing to printmaking to sculpture and many more in between. If you’re not afraid of trying new things, this class is for you!
In this course students will:
Spend most of their class time creating 2D and 3D artwork, such as Illustrations and Fiber Sculptures.
Apply new techniques and experiment with various art mediums, such as ink and oil.
Increase knowledge and appreciation for art related topics.
Ceramics I: 0222

Ceramics I is a great class for students who like to work with their hands and get messy! This introductory course is focused on the basic skills of working with clay and using glaze to enhance their piece.
In this class students will:
Create projects that employ various techniques and tools, such as throwing a bowl on the wheel and hand building various clay sculptures.
Expand knowledge of art from various time periods, cultures, and style movements to create ceramics.
Construct functional and non-functional ceramic art.
Develop composition skills and success in using the Elements and Principles of Art and Design and understand the practicality of design while engaging in the four stages of art making: Concept, Composition, Craftsmanship and Critique.

Ceramics II expands on the knowledge and skill that was learned in Ceramics I. Projects are slightly more open-ended which gives students an opportunity to push themselves creatively. In addition, students get more time to work on the wheel.
Create projects that employ various techniques and tools, such as a teapot or container with a lid on the Potter’s Wheel.
Expand knowledge of functional vs. non-functional ceramics while learning advanced Potter’s Wheel techniques.
Further develop composition skills and success in using the Elements and Principles of Art and Design and understand the practicality of design while engaging in the four stages of art making: Concept, Composition, Craftsmanship and Critique.
Computer Graphic Design: 0260

Computer Graphic Design focuses on visual communication for a specific audience, and how to communicate concepts effectively by using the elements and principles of design. This class takes place in a computer lab and uses Adobe Illustrator and Adobe Photoshop. It is a great introduction to these design programs and is a great choice for people who define themselves as artistic, as well as for those who do not!
In this class students will:
Learn about and use Adobe Illustrator and Photoshop to create their projects on the computer.
Develop design skills by successfully making use of the Elements and Principles of Art and Design.
Gain an understanding of the opportunities that Graphic Design has to offer as an art field.
Engage in the art criticism process through small and large group critiques.

Digital Photography is a great class for motivated individuals looking to expand on their current knowledge of photography. This course will cover everything from framing your subject, finding the most interesting angles, and how to make your picture more exciting with Photoshop techniques.
In this course students will:
Learn how digital cameras work and learn more about the extra functions and features that are often overlooked.
Demonstrate basic photo-enhancement skills with Adobe Photoshop and Web tools.
Compile a portfolio of digital images that exhibits creativity, personal artistic style and growth.

Drawing class is not just for people who are good at drawing! Do you want to be better at drawing or just enjoy drawing? In this class, students learn a variety of drawing and compositional techniques that can be used with all sorts of mediums. Students study subjects from both life and photographs, and learn how to look at their subject with an artistic eyes - employing knowledge of proportion, perspective and other drawing “tricks.”
In this course students will:
Demonstrate deeper knowledge of drawing techniques
Experiment with various drawing mediums (charcoal, pastel, pen, pencil, conte, etc.)

Printmaking is about making multiples!! It is a fun, hands-on class where students will use basic drawing skills to help them learn about and perform a variety of printing techniques. Students use objects and techniques such as: Potatoes (for real!), Silkscreens (or screen printing), Metal and Plexiglass (etching), Woodblocks and Linoleum (relief).
In this course students will:
Create multiples of their artwork that they can trade, sell and/or display!
Reflect on and gain inspiration from art produced in various eras, cultures and art movements.
Assemble a body of artwork that exhibits creativity, personal artistic style and growth.

Art Metals & Glass I is an introductory course for students who want to learn how to create their own unique metal and glass based projects in a variety of mediums and techniques. This class is often the first time students use this material, no previous knowledge is necessary!

In Sculpture class, students explore a wide variety of sculptural techniques and different mediums to create both large and small-scale sculptures. This class is geared toward students who like to create things with their hands and work independently as well as collaboratively.
In this class, students will:
Create projects that employ a wider variety of media and techniques including modeling, molding, casting, and collaborative installation, such as Deconstructive Book Sculpture or Portrait Sculpture out of clear packing tape.
Expand knowledge of the origins and history of sculpture.
Further develop composition skills and success in using the elements and principles of art and design, while engaging in the four stages of art making: Concept, Composition, Craftsmanship, and Critique.

This is a course designed for students who have excelled in at least 3 MHHS art courses and want to explore beyond what our current art department courses offer. Students will direct their learning and artwork by focusing on art mediums and techniques of their choice. The instructor will assist students with concept development and technique, as well as challenge students with critiques, discussions, and creating professional proposals and portfolios.
In this class, the student will:
Collaborate with your peers to create art and a sense of artistic community.
Increase your understanding, appreciation, and advocacy of the visual arts through articles, discussions, and critiques.
Enjoy the freedom of self-directed learning by focusing on mediums and techniques of your choice.
Assemble a body of artwork that exhibits creativity, personal artistic style and growth, and organize it into a professional portfolio (great for college applications!).
Youth Apprenticeship

The Wisconsin Youth Apprenticeship program integrates school-based and work-based learning. Youth apprenticeship students will continue taking classes at their high school while working as an apprentice at a participating business. Students will be enrolled in a technical class related to their youth apprenticeship program. These courses may be offered at either their high school or off campus. Entry into a youth apprenticeship program requires an application process.
