This hands-on class is for students who are interested in a variety of different art techniques and mediums, such as drawing, painting, printmaking, sculpture and ceramics. Within each unit, students learn new art concepts in relation to the art elements and principles, new techniques and about both historical and contemporary artists related to those techniques. Students engage in in-class studies (mini projects) and long term projects, as well as keep a weekly creative sketchbook. Art I is a prerequisite for Art II, Drawing, Painting and Printmaking courses.

This hands-on class is a great way for students to try a lot of different art mediums and techniques. Projects range from drawing to printmaking to sculpture and many more in between. If you’re not afraid of trying new things, this class is for you!

Ceramics I is a great class for students who like to work with their hands and get messy! This introductory course is focused on the basic skills of working with clay and using glaze to enhance their piece.

Ceramics II expands on the knowledge and skill that was learned in Ceramics I. Projects are slightly more open-ended which gives students an opportunity to push themselves creatively. In addition, students get more time to work on the wheel. 


Computer Graphic Design: 0260

Computer Graphic Design focuses on visual communication for a specific audience, and how to communicate concepts effectively by using the elements and principles of design. This class takes place in a computer lab and uses Adobe Illustrator and Adobe Photoshop. It is a great introduction to these design programs and is a great choice for people who define themselves as artistic, as well as for those who do not!

Advanced Computer Graphic Design is a course for students who excelled in Graphic Design. Students taking this course should have a clear understanding of design and how to use a computer to create their own unique projects.

Digital Photography is a great class for motivated individuals looking to expand on their current knowledge of photography. This course will cover everything from framing your subject, finding the most interesting angles, and how to make your picture more exciting with Photoshop techniques.

Drawing class is not just for people who are good at drawing!  Do you want to be better at drawing or just enjoy drawing?  In this class, students learn a variety of drawing and compositional techniques that can be used with all sorts of mediums.  Students study subjects from both life and photographs, and learn how to look at their subject with an artistic eyes - employing knowledge of proportion, perspective and other drawing “tricks.”

Painting class will help students develop personal artistic style, improve their compositional skills, and master the elements and principles of art while engaging in the four stages of art making: Concept, Composition, Craftsmanship and Critique.

Printmaking is about making multiples!!  It is a fun, hands-on class where students will use basic drawing skills to help them learn about and perform a variety of printing techniques.  Students use objects and techniques such as: Potatoes (for real!), Silkscreens (or screen printing), Metal and Plexiglass (etching), Woodblocks and Linoleum (relief).

Art Metals & Glass I is an introductory course for students who want to learn how to create their own unique metal and glass based projects in a variety of mediums and techniques. This class is often the first time students use this material, no previous knowledge is necessary!

Art Metals & Glass II expands on the knowledge that students gained in Metals & Glass I to create more advanced designs and projects.  This class takes a closer look at contemporary glass and metal artwork in our society.

In Sculpture class, students explore a wide variety of sculptural techniques and different mediums to create both large and small-scale sculptures.  This class is geared toward students who like to create things with their hands and work independently as well as collaboratively.

This is a course designed for students who have excelled in at least 3 MHHS art courses and want to explore beyond what our current art department courses offer.  Students will direct their learning and artwork by focusing on art mediums and techniques of their choice.  The instructor will assist students with concept development and technique, as well as challenge students with critiques, discussions, and creating professional proposals and portfolios.

In this class, the student will:

Youth Apprenticeship 

Informational Technology-Web and Digital Communications Pathway or Graphic Arts/Print Pathway

The Wisconsin Youth Apprenticeship program integrates school-based and work-based learning.  Youth apprenticeship students will continue taking classes at their high school while working as an apprentice at a participating business.  Students will be enrolled in a technical class related to their youth apprenticeship program.  These courses may be offered at either their high school or off campus.  Entry into a youth apprenticeship program requires an application process.
