This course will develop an awareness of the value of physical, mental, and social health.  Practices that might be harmful to one’s physical and mental health will also be explored.  Additional studies will examine suicide, depression, stress management, nutrition & human growth and development. This course includes reading The 7 Habits of Highly Successful Teens and opportunities for student led instruction.

Team Games 9 : 0409

Physical Education classes will be scheduled for a full semester.  Students are expected to be in athletic clothes (clothes that don’t hinder one’s participation) and footwear (shoes that tie and are designed for physical exercise).  Students should have locks for their gym lockers which can be purchased in the main office of the HS or reused from their Middle School PE lockers. 

Physical Education units have a team and/or individual sports focus; lifelong fitness is also stressed.  Examples of such are as follows: tennis, touch football, softball, ultimate frisbee, golf, soccer, basketball, badminton, pickleball, floor hockey, retro games and fitness testing.  We will also utilize the fitness center on a handful of days to introduce the students to strength training.  An alternative to taking Team Games 9 is Lifetime Fitness.

Team Games 10 : 0410

Lifetime Fitness is a .5 credit physical education class offered to grades 9 and 10 as an alternative to team sports-based curriculum.  Lifetime classes will be scheduled for a full semester.  Students are expected to be in athletic clothes (clothes that don’t hinder one’s participation) and footwear (shoes that tie and are designed for physical exercise). Students should have locks for their gym lockers which can be purchased in the main office of the HS or reused from their Middle School PE lockers. 

Students will participate in a variety of activities with an emphasis on life-long fitness on a more individual level. Some units included are: aerobics, backyard games, badminton, dancing, fitness center, jump rope (including double Dutch), Just Dance, mindfulness, step aerobics, outdoor activities (walking/hiking, tennis, frisbee golf, golf), tabata (interval training), yoga and zumba.  The final exam will include creation and performance of a personal workout.

Individual/Team Games 11-12 : 1185/2185

Physical Education classes will be scheduled daily for a full semester.  Students are expected to be in athletic clothes (clothes that don’t hinder one’s participation) and footwear (shoes that tie and are designed for physical exercise). Students should have locks for their gym lockers which can be purchased in the main office of the HS. 

Units in this section of physical education will focus more on target heart rate and the FITT Principle while participating in team games and some individual sports. New units for students include bowling, archery, backyard games, and disc golf.

Strength & Fitness Training I : 0404

Students in this course will be working in the Fitness Center on alternating days and creating a workout plan using the FITT Principle as a guide. The other days will be teacher-led and the focus will be improving overall fitness by introducing fitness activities that target the 9 areas of fitness: strength, power, agility, balance, flexibility, local muscle endurance, cardio endurance, strength endurance, and coordination.

Strength and Fitness Training II : 0408

Prereq: Strength and Fitness Training I 

This weightlifting and fitness class was designed to provide each student an opportunity to continue their knowledge and understanding of strength and fitness training principles. Students will understand the importance of setting goals for personal improvement and achievement, and will leave the class with a lifelong understanding of how to maintain adequate physical fitness for a healthy lifestyle. They will accomplish this by spending all class periods in the Fitness Center.  The first half of the semester of class students will have a workout designed by TeamBuilder that they will work with and chart to see improvements.  The second half of the semester students will have the freedom to develop their own workout plan that focuses on the 9 areas of fitness. This class will also incorporate the use of video technology in the evaluation of lifting techniques and peer teaching.

Online Physical Education : 0407 

0.5 credit (can only be taken once)

This course can be taken one time and runs one semester.  Online Physical Education combines the best of online instruction with actual student participation in weekly cardiovascular, aerobic, and muscle toning activities. The course promotes a keen understanding of the value of physical fitness and aims to motivate students to participate in physical activities throughout their lives. Specific areas of study include: cardiovascular exercise and care, safe exercising, building muscle strength and endurance, injury prevention, fitness skills and FITT benchmarks, goal setting, nutrition and diet (vitamins and minerals, food labels, evaluation product claims), and stress management. The course requires routine participation in adult-supervised physical activities and requires several paper assignments to be completed. Successful completion of this course will require parent/legal guardian sign-off on student-selected physical activities and on weekly participation reports to verify the student is meeting his or her requirements and responsibilities. Online Physical Education is aligned to national and state standards and the Presidential Council on Physical Fitness and Sports.
