James Madison was born on March 16, 1751. He was the oldest of 12 children. He went to college at College of New Jersey which is now Princeton University. When he got out of college, he lacked direction in his life, the revolution gave him the spark that he needed.
James Madison was a member of the Virginia House of delegates and the second continental congress. He worked with Alexander Hamilton and John jay to co- author the Federalist Papers. James Madison orchestrated the formation of the Democratic- Republican party with Thomas Jefferson. He also helped Washington draft his inaugural address.
In 1808 Madison was elected president, he was the 4th president of the US. As Madison was elected the War of 1812 was beginning. Madison believed the war was going to be a quick victory, but the British troops were prepared. The Brits had alliances with Native Americans led by Tecumseh. There was many hardships during the war. However, after the war was over Madison claimed that they neither gained or lost anything. The war is also known as Mr.Madison's War. The treaty was ratified on February 16,1845. Madison's presidency ended in 1817 at the age of 65.
James Madison married Dolley Payne Todd on September 15, 1794. Dolley was the sister-in-law to George Steptoe Washington, who was George Washington's nephew. In the war of 1812, she stayed behind and saved paintings, silver, and the portrait of George Washington.
James Madison wrote most of the Bill of Rights. The most well-known amendment is "Amendment I: Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting free exercise thereof ; or abridging the freedom of speech, or of the press; or the right of people to peacefully assemble, and to petition the government for a redress of grievances."
James Madison helped Thomas Jefferson establish the University of Virginia. On June 28, 1836, James Madison died of congestive heart failure at age 85.
