HOLIDAY CONCERT
December 13, 2022
Colors of Christmas is a literal musical "quilt" featuring a number of holiday favorites. This piece begins with heralding bells and chimes introducing a fanfare based on Jingle Bells and Joy to the World. Our musical quilt continues through several different modes and settings before our fanfare returns to conclude the piece. How many melodies can you name?
In this work, the composer has reimagined the jolly old elf as a warrior of the winter wastes. The familiar tunes of Up on the Housetop and Jingle Bells are transformed into a war cry for this incarnation of Santa, as he navigates the snowy desert with his eight mighty reign-deer: Basher, Danger, Lancer, Victim, Bomb-it, Brutis, Runner, and Blitz-Them. On Christmas night, he fights his way across the unforgiving terrain in time to bring toys to all the good children, leaving a path of destruction and candy cane carnage in his wake.
It's the Most Wonderful Time of the Year is a popular Christmas song written in 1963 by Edward Pola and George Wyle. It was recorded and released that year by pop singer Andy Williams for his first Christmas album, The Andy Williams Christmas Album. The song is a celebration and description of activities associated with the Christmas season, focusing primarily on get-togethers between friends and families. Among the activities included in the song is the telling of "scary ghost stories," a Victorian Christmas tradition that has mostly fallen into disuse, but survives in the seasonal popularity of numerous adaptations of Charles Dickens' A Christmas Carol. Other activities mentioned include hosting parties, spontaneous visits from friends, universal social gaiety, spending time with loved ones, sledding for children, roasting marshmallows, sharing stories about previous Christmases, and singing Christmas carols
From the opening strains of "Angels We Have Heard on High" to the majestic "Joy to the World," Noel! is a celebration of the season designed to bring happiness to audiences as an energetic opener to a concert.
This gentle piece reminds us of the wistful and whimsical feelings we have when looking into a snow globe. The soaring melodies and colorful accompaniments recall the warm memories of friends and family during the holiday season. "Snow Globe" is sure to provide a special trip down memory lane to your childhood when the magic of Christmas was vividly alive!
Containing "Deck the Halls," "The First Noël," and "We Wish You a Merry Christmas," is sure to get your foot tapping and your Christmas spirit soaring! This piece was written while snowed in during a November snow storm where the composer had no power but PLENTY of Christmas spirit!!
by Leroy Anderson
Sleigh Ride is a light orchestra standard whose music was composed by Leroy Anderson. The composer had formed the original idea for the piece during a heat wave in July 1946, and he finished the work in February 1948. The original recordings were instrumental versions. The lyrics, about riding in a sleigh and other fun wintertime activities, were written by Mitchell Parish in 1950. The orchestral version was first recorded in 1949 by Arthur Fiedler and the Boston Pops Orchestra. A selection of the artists who have recorded it include Herb Alpert, The Andrews Sisters, The Carpenters, Bing Crosby, The Boston Pops Orchestra, Ella Fitzgerald, the amazing Debbie Gibson, The Muppets, and Andy Williams.
