Mike Major currently serves as the Director of Bands at McDonald Middle School in Mesquite, TX.
When Mr. Major arrived at McDonald 20 years ago, there were only 50 students enrolled in the entire band program. Now, it is thriving with over 250 students in one 6th grade Beginner Band and three 7th and 8th grade Advanced Bands. Mr. Major's bands have consistently earned Superior ratings at UIL Evaluation and Invitational Contests. He previously worked at North Mesquite High School in Mesquite, TX, and Gentry Public Schools in Gentry, AR.
Mr. Major has worked at the University of Arkansas Summer Music Camp for the last 30 years. He started as a counselor taking care of a floor of students. Then he and his wife Nikki took over head counselor for the camp. Mr. Major continued head counseling for the next 15 years. He retired from be the head counselor and is now teaching a band during Jr. High Week of the 2 week music camp.
Mr. Major is a 1994 graduate of the University of Arkansas and holds a Bachelor's Degree in Music Education. He earned his Master's of Education from Texas A&M University-Commerce in 2008.
Mr. Major is a a member of TMEA (Texas Music Educators Association), TBA (Texas Bandmasters Association), TMAA (Texas Music Adjudicators Association), and TFAA Cohort (Texas Fine Arts Administrators)
Mr. Major resides in Garland, Texas, with his wife of over 32 years, Nikki. Nikki is the District Testing Facilitator for Mesquite ISD. They have two children: Grace; a recent dance graduate of the California Institute of the Arts, whose goal is to be a choreographer, and Max; who was a trombone player in the Big Blue Band at North Mesquite High School, and is now a recent college graduate of Dallas College with a Forensic Technician certificate.
