Sail the high seas with the Concert Band in this exciting work by Captain Randall Standridge! Blackbeard is intended to conjure images of pirates on the high seas and battles on the rollicking waves. This exciting adventure in 3/4 time features pirate chants and bombastic percussion. The work derives a great deal of its style from cinematic traditions in movies, where most seafaring moments are accompanied by music in triple meters. One should imagine the famous pirate aboard his ship, the Queen Anne's Revenge, laughing raucously and casting an eye over the horizon to the next unfortunate vessel to meet him in the water. Rated ARRGH!

Dragon Slayer

Composed by Rob Grice

The dragon is a legendary beast in the folklore of many European and Asian cultures. These creatures are traditionally portrayed as ferocious fire-breathing beasts that represent the evils fought by human beings. According to medieval legends, dragons lived in wild, remote regions of the world and guarded great treasures from their dens. The person who slayed the dragon would gain all its wealth. Beowulf, Apollo and Saint George all became legendary folklore heroes after slaying dragons.

In Dragon Slayer, you'll feel the fire of the dragon in this dark, medieval-sounding piece. The percussion section leads the way, using a brake drum and gong, and the winds contribute with a robust style and modal sounds. It all adds up to one dramatic presentation, the final battle between one dragon and one hopeful dragon slayer. Who wins? You decide.

A note from the composer:

"I play video games. A lot of video games. I also watch a lot of action movies. The music for these guilty pleasures has left an indelible mark on me and their sound and texture are as much a part of my musical vocabulary as a Beethoven symphony. Armory is a bombastic work for young band, inspired by these sounds; it alternates between minor and Phyrigian modes to create a dark and sinister soundscape. The use of aggressive articulations and brake drum give the work an industrial and militaristic feel. Safe performances are NOT recommended. Suit up. Grab your weapon. Go to war!"

Shadows Unleashed

Composed by Brian Balmages

Exuding a dark and somewhat mischievous character, Shadows Unleashed paints a picture of shadows moving into and out of the darkness as they carry on a ritualistic dance.  At times the music sounds playful, yet at other times it takes on a more sinister character.  The shadows begin to emerge when the tempo changes, and they continue their dance. Erupting out of the darkness, the driving music continues feeding on itself as it moves to a dramatic finish.

Attack of the Zombie Trombones

Composed by Larry Neeck

They're alive! The zombies are taking over the band, and they've started with your trombone section! In this story of zombies chasing through the band set, zombies take over the trombone section's brains and then come for the rest of the band. The other instrument sections try to fight them off, but if you listen closely, you will hear the different sections succumb to the zombies as the music progresses. Special percussion and wind effects, haunting melodies, and a relentless beat provide a dramatic and effective change of pace. We hope you enjoy this frighteningly fun piece, that is, if you can make it through without becoming a zombie yourself!
