Here at Concord High there are so many academic options for students to explore. With teachers taking on multiple subjects the variety of classes to select from expands. Andrew Francis, a living earth teacher, shares “Living Earth is a good intro course because it promotes critical thinking and develops the skills students will need in their science courses going forward and hopefully into their careers later (science or not).” Students are required to take living earth and chemistry which gives them a solid foundation for their elected science classes in the years to follow.
Every classroom has a different environment created by the teacher’s preferred method of educating. Whether it be lectures and packets of work or hands on activities students gain valuable experience and knowledge. Some students learn better with hands-on interactive activities. Mr. Pham, a chemistry and physics teacher, embraces this teaching style in his class and shares “ It’s student-centered and hands-on. Instead of just lecturing, I have students do the science, then we explore together, and finally explain the concepts.” This way students feel the drive to explore new scientific theories in fun ways.
On the other hand some classes are a balance of both. Mrs. Stanziano’s physiology and zoology classes are filled with notes to engrave information and hands-on activities for experience every week. Students have a chance to perform actual scientific procedures and see how the information they’re learning is practical. From observing microscopic skin films to locating arties in actual animal parts students have real laboratory experience.
With more than seven science teachers the science department is full of brilliant minds who work together to give their students the best class experience. There is a subject and classroom for every student to feel comfortable in to learn and grow in numerous ways. For students who need a bigger push there’s AP Biology, AP Physics, and Physiology Honors. Stricter curriculums and material prepare students for college classes in their possible future.
These classes teach students so much more than facts and science itself. It teaches them to work with others for their goals, do thorough research, and get familiar with different roles based on the environment. “Learning and then seeing real life examples helps me on tests because I can remember putting the information to use.“ shares Giselle Vasquez, a senior in AP Biology. Students enjoy these methods of learning and retain the material better with experience.
Classrooms are centered around the students so engagement flows more naturally. “I understand how important it is to feel seen, supported, and challenged in the right ways. By using trauma-informed and inclusive teaching, I aim to create a space where everyone can thrive and really get science.” shares Mr.Pham about his classroom environment. Time, energy, and love goes into creating curriculums, classwork, and activities so students will have a deep understanding of the subjects they are learning and can take that knowledge to life after high school. Memories and moments will follow students beyond the classroom and beyond Concord High to wherever life takes them!
