Yearbook is often overlooked as just a fun elective, but in reality it's one of the most hardworking and impactful classes. It's not only about taking pictures or picking fonts, but it's a combination of journalism, photography, graphic design, and teamwork. This class requires dedication, creativity, and a strong sense of responsibility among all the students. It gives them a chance to build something meaningful that will be remembered for years to come.
Impact on the school:
The yearbook captures all the moments that make the yearbook special. Big events such as prom or football games are all moments captured that make the book so special to look back on. It gives everyone the chance to be seen and remembered. Aside from this it also gives students the chance to feel included and valued. It highlights the diversity of the student body showing all the different personalities, talents, and experiences that make up the school community. According To Taylor Corson "Having a yearbook is important because it is a good way to look back on your high school memories when you're older. It is also a good way to see how much you have done over the school year".
Impact on students:
Being in the yearbook class teaches you how to take on different roles such as being initiative and thinking creatively. There are no guidelines that teach you how to design the perfect page or how to write the perfect caption. By having this sense of liberty and freedom, the staff in the class are able to build confidence along the way. Working on the book can also help students discover passions they didn't even know they had. It unlocks different paths that could potentially be used in the future for other classes or even in the real world itself. Plus, the friendships you build while in the class are unique. Since you’re working on a long term project with shared goals and responsibilities, you get really close to the other students in the class. You celebrate victories together like finishing a deadline, getting good pictures at an event, or even pushing through the stress of just putting it all together even when things get tough. As explained by Johana Ramirez Covarrubias "being involved in yearbook helps me as a student build confidence and leadership by helping myself being put out there and talking to people I've never talked to before as well as help me express my creative side."
The Atmosphere:
The vibe in this class is very different from one's in any other class. Students move around the class bouncing ideas off each other, working together to put designs together, editing photos, and even stepping up to take pictures at an event when no one else is able to. It's organized chaos in the best way. Although, there is also a strong sense of professionalism. Because the yearbook is a product that the student body is able to purchase and look back on forever, the staff also have to be serious. They hold each other accountable, meet hard deadlines, and constantly look for ways to improve. The balance between freedom and responsibility is what makes the class so impactful. From the perspective of Alejandra Reyes-Cruz " The atmosphere in Yearbook class is different compared to other classes because although we have our assignments, everyone helps each other out. It's a collaboration effort to capture the school year memories".
Why yearbook matters:
At the end of the day, a yearbook is more than just a collection of photos and quotes. It's a time capsule. Years from now, students will flip through its pages and remember who their friends were and what their lives were like during these unforgettable years. But even more than that, the yearbook is a celebration of everyone's story.
