Empowered to Serve at CHS
Here at Concord High School, we have many award winning programs, including our Leadership program. Leadership is built around student voice, creativity, and service. With 2 different branches of leadership, our campus is surrounded by student leaders who work hard to make school a more welcoming and fun place for everyone. In ASB, we focus on empowering students to serve around campus through inclusive events, student and staff appreciation, and fun breaks from school. Leadership is important on campus because it helps bring students together and creates experiences that make high school memorable. Empowering to serve is our theme for the current year. These themes help us create goals and guidelines for how we want our leadership class to oppertate. We were this theme on the back of our leadership shirts as a constent reminder of why we serve. Leah, the sophomore secretary and treasurer in Leadership, shared, “I joined leadership because I love being able to plan things out and have the opportunity to take initiative in things to make sure it can be planned out smoothly and be fun.” Her experience connects to our theme of empowering students to serve, since Leadership gives students the chance to take initiative and help create meaningful experiences for the campus.
This class is the backbone of most events taking place on campus, including Homecoming, Prom, rallies, student wellness events, lunchtime activities, and even our own conference. All rallies, dances, lunch activities and more are created through Leadership. From brainstorming ideas to decorations and final details, planning events takes teamwork and communication. One of the biggest things Leadership does is the annual Leadership Exchange, a conference we host every year. With an average of around 400 students attending, we bring in a keynote speaker, run student-led workshops and SWAPs, and host games and activities. ALL student ran! Students are divided into different committees that focus on different events, and each committee has a committee chair who helps guide t he students. In these committees, students fully create an event from start to finish. Kenzie, a sophomore in Leadership, shared, “I love to plan events like Leadership Exchange, Winter and Spring Brunch, overall our bigger events because the end result is always priceless.” Her experience shows how Leadership gives students the opportunity to create events that bring people together. Seeing students enjoy the events after all the hard work and planning makes everything worth it and creates memories that students will remember throughout high school.
Leadership is also run by ASB officers who are elected by the entire school. These officers represent the student body, run the class, and help guide all officers and representatives throughout the year. Maddy Flores , the current ASB President, helps lead this work by supporting committees, keeping communication between groups organized, and making sure everything runs smoothly behind the scenes. She shared, “for the most part, ASB focuses on the little things that might go unnoticed by the school or even the leadership class. we oversee each committee and their event to ensure everything goes smoothly, and coordinate with each other as asb officers to make sure committees are communicating with each other when necessary.” A class is only successful with studenrts that work up front and students that work in the background.
To end, Our Leadership program is also award winning. Every year, our program receives the OLPA award, which stands for Outstanding Leadership Program Award. This award recognizes programs that go above and beyond in their service, leadership, and impact on campus. It is awarded annually at the California State Leadership Conference and highlights all the hard work and dedication our students put into the program each year.
