After failing to defend his floor exercise title, Filipino gymnastics sensation Carlos Yulo bagged the gold in the vault finals and solidified his success more with a silver medal in the parallel bars finals on October 24, 2021 at the 50th FIG Artistic Gymnastics World Championships, held in Kitakyushu, Japan.

Yulo was the first to perform in the vault finals and was able to receive an average score of 14.916 with the help of his magnificently executed Kasamatsu double fall and Dragulescu, which earned him 14.800 and 15.033 respectively.

Although recording the highest execution score with his winning vault with a score of 9.433, his victory was still uncertain until the very end, because the qualifying event’s top performer, Ukraine’s Nazar Chepurnyi, performed last. Chepurnyi recorded 14.866 in his first attempt, but failed to land on his second, which resulted in his fall to the seventh place. This confirms Yulo’s championship in the vault final.

After the vault championship comes the parallel bar finals. As the third performer, Yulo scored 15.300, which allowed him to take the first place early on, setting a mental barrier to the last six performers. However, China’s HU Xuwei seemed unruffled by Yulo’s score, overtaking him with a score of 15.466 from his routine. Xuwei ended up taking the gold, followed by Yulo with silver.

Being placed fifth in the floor exercise, Yulo’s podium finish in both vault finals and parallel bar finals showed how remarkable his will is in winning. These medals marked his third and fourth medals in the world championships, after winning bronze and gold medals in floor exercise in Doha 2018 and Stuttgart 2019 respectively.
