FROM PLACING LAST TO STEPPING ON THE PODIUM: FILIPINO GYMNAST, CARLOS YULO BAGS TWO MEDALS DESPITE DIFFICULTIES 

Carlos Yulo was landing on his bottom after declining performances. Now, he’s recognized as one of the world’s best in two apparatuses.

From placing last to stepping on the podium twice, the decorated Filipino gymnast demonstrated his perseverance as he bagged two medals in the 51st FIG Artistic World Gymnastics Championships in Liverpool, United Kingdom. 


Yulo advanced to the finals in the all-around category for floor exercise, vault, and parallel bars last Tuesday, November 1st, in Philippine time. 


Supporters were truly appalled by the performance of the gymnast as he amassed 3rd in the men’s all-around category gaining a soaring score of 84.66. In the finals round, Yulo ranked 8th with a score of 82.098.

The floor exercise finals, which commenced last Saturday, November 5, was the apparatus that the majority expected the gymnast to rule. However, due to an unfortunate decline that happened early in his routine, he dropped to 7th place with a score of 13.300.

November 6th, Sunday, was the day the jin was victorious. Yulo bagged a silver medal in the vault and a bronze medal in parallel bars. After multiple tumbles, Yulo made a strong comeback in the two apparatuses he qualified for in the finals.


Day 2 finals started with vault and the Filipino gymnast started hot, accomplishing a score of 15.000 for his first vault. He stayed consistent for his second vault, resulting in a score of 14.900 and gaining the winning final score of 14.950. The athlete stepped on the podium with Armenia on top and the bronze going to Ukraine.

Parallel bars were the second apparatus to be performed by the gymnasts and the second time that Yulo would be stepping on the podium. Carlos displayed controlled and straight handstands on the apparatus, which gave him a score of 15.366, resulting in him ranking 3rd, overall giving him a bronze medal with China ranking first and Germany ranking 2nd.

Carlos stepped on the podium, each time standing tall and radiating Filipino pride.


The gymnast is slowly attracting the spotlight and is expected to improve more in his upcoming training toward the fight in Paris.
