You have 2 options as an incoming 9th grader; you may take Honors US History or AP US Government & Politics (AP NSL). While other schools offer AP US History, we do not offer that course to incoming 9th graders. AP US History can be taken in 10th grade (if the student took AP US Government already) or as an elective in 11th or 12th grade,
This is really up to you and your student! We do not have a prerequisite or recommendation process. However, US History is the continuation of the Advanced US History taken in 8th grade; AP US Government (AP NSL) follows the curriculum, standards and objectives set by the College Board. While both courses have a focus on content while developing social studies skills in analysis, evaluation, and writing, the AP US Government course is also preparing the student for the AP exam in May. The amount of time that a student will spend on assignments outside of class for AP US Government is more than the typical Honors US History class. In addition, the pacing is much faster in AP US Government than in Honors US History. If your student does not have a passion for social studies and opts to take Honors US History as a 9th grader, no worries! Your student can always take AP US Government the following year as a 10th grader. Please keep the new Healthy Limits guidelines in mind!
I strongly recommend that you select a course for which you have an interest! There are many electives in social studies - both AP and non- AP, full year and 1 semester. You can also review the course offerings for descriptions of our course offerings - be sure to scroll to the 2nd page to access all of the course we offer! Also, some of the AP courses that you can take to fulfill graduation requirements may also be taken as an elective later (if not already taken earlier).
