Create handmade cards for patients, veterans, healthcare workers, & elderdly (Virtual)

ATTENTION: Email support@arts-n-stem4hearts.org to officially sign up for this event. From there, we will send the full expectations and guidelines for this project. Our volunteers must review these guidelines before starting.

SSL Hours: 15 completed cards = 1 SSL hour

Where: From home, on your own schedule

Who it helps: Hospital patients, veterans, first responders, and assisted-living residents served by Arts-n-STEM4Hearts.

Description

Brighten someone's day with a handmade card! Volunteers design and create handwritten cards that we deliver to people who need a little encouragement — patients, seniors, veterans, and first responders. Every card you make goes directly to someone in our community. Make 15 cards to earn 1 SSL hour. You're welcome to make as many sets as you'd like.

Guidelines (please read before starting)

• Handwritten messages only. Printed or typed messages inside the card are not accepted — the personal touch is what makes these special.

• Effort. Decorate with stickers, markers, crayons, pens, and color. A thoughtful, colorful card means much more to the person who receives it.

• Keep messages appropriate. No religious or political messages and nothing inappropriate, so that every card can be given to anyone we serve

Bake Cakes for Birthday Cakes 4 Free

Birthday Cakes 4 Free Maryland (BC4F) is a nonprofit organization that collects and delivers birthday cakes to financially and socially disadvantaged children and seniors. We are an entirely student run organization! 

Students bake cakes in their homes. Cakes must meet the container guidelines which are outlined on www.bc4f.org. The decoration/flavor/design of your cake(s) is up to you but we would prefer if you could write “Happy Birthday!” on your cake(s). You can make a cake from a cake mix or your favorite recipe. Round, square or rectangle cakes are all okay as long as they are individually and securely boxed, with lids taped for transport. Round cakes must have multiple layers. Single layer 9" round cakes will not earn SSL hours. We also accept cupcakes. Twenty-four cupcakes are equivalent to one cake. Cake requirements are posted on our website.  We DO NOT accept pies or alternative baked goods. ALL decorations MUST be edible. https://www.bc4f.org/faq

Children's day at Brookside Garden (In Person)

Join Brookside Gardens as a volunteer for Children's Day on September 19, 2026.

Children and their families will explore the science and art of gardening through child-driven art projects and engaging science activities. Kids will rotate through our outdoor activity stations designed to educate and entertain.

Volunteers should dress family-friendly and for the weather as the event is outdoors

Food distribution Volunteer - Glenmont Satelite(In Person)

Volunteers are needed to help distribute food to Manna participants at our outdoor satellite location in Glenmont. This includes setting up, checking participants in, directing traffic, and loading cars. This activity takes place outside, rain or shine. 

Ideally, we are looking for volunteers that can commit to a weekly schedule but intermittent opportunities may also be available.  

Requirements:

• Volunteers cannot currently be receiving food from Manna.

• Volunteers must be at least 16 years old and be able to work independently.  

• Volunteers are required to speak English and demonstrate good communication skills to assist visitors and work alongside other community volunteers. 

• Volunteers must be able to lift 25 pounds.

• Volunteers must be comfortable bending, reaching, and standing on their feet for the duration of the shift.   

• This opportunity is eligible for Student Service Learning (SSL) hours if the student meets the requirements.

Shifts:

Tuesdays, 2:30-6pm 

Volunteer shifts must be scheduled in advance and confirmed by staff. We do not accept walk-ins.
