The Seven Keys to College Readiness

General College Information

College Terms & What Do They Mean?

Early Decision - This is the early admission program offered by many colleges whereby students must commit in advance to attend a certain college if they are admitted under this program. Students should know for sure that this is the one school they want to attend and feel that they meet the stringent requirements for application. It is a binding commitment.

Early Action - This is another early admission program offered by colleges where students must meet the same early application deadlines. However, upon notification of acceptance, students can wait until they have heard from all their schools about acceptance and financial aid before making a commitment.

Regular Admission - This requires students to apply by a set deadline which varies by college.

Rolling Admissions - This means there is no set deadline, but the earlier you apply, the better your chances of getting accepted, especially if your qualifications are borderline.

Priority Deadline - This is a set deadline for applications whereby students who are accepted are given PRIORITY consideration for admission, housing, scholarships, and other aid.

Common Application - This allows students to fill out one standard application and submit it to many schools. It is available online.

Academic Common Market - This program is intended to allow degree-seeking MARYLAND residents to enroll at certain out-of-state institutions in undergraduate programs of study not offered at a MD public college/university and to pay in-state tuition. This is a cooperative tuition-reduction agreement among Southern Regional Education Board states, of which Maryland is one.  If PUBLIC institutions in your home state do not offer degree programs in your field of study, it may be possible to arrange a waiver of out-of-state tuition to attend a cooperating PUBLIC institution in another participating state. These programs may change yearly. For more Information, click here.

Montgomery Scholars

The Montgomery Scholars Program is a selective-admission two-year interdisciplinary honors program designed for high school graduates as the first step in completing a four-year degree.

Montgomery Scholars will launch their college studies at a fraction of the cost of most four-year schools. The College will award merit scholarships to each student admitted into the Scholars program. These Montgomery Scholars scholarships cover the cost of full-tuition and fees, for two years of study at Montgomery College (30 credits per year at the in-county resident tuition rate).

The Universities at Shady Grove (USG)

Established in 2000, The Universities at Shady Grove (USG) offers select degree programs from nine public Maryland universities on one convenient campus in Montgomery County.

Students apply directly to the university offering their chosen major, and on the application, they simply select USG as their preferred campus location. The professors, curriculum, and degree are provided by the home university (it does not say USG on your diploma!), but students at the USG campus benefit from small class sizes, increased scholarship opportunities, and an array of customized on-site services and student life - leading to a more personalized, cost-effective, and time-saving path to degree completion.

USG's innovative and pioneering partnership approach to higher education is designed to connect local college students to outstanding career opportunities, while providing regional employers with a highly educated, skilled workforce. Only the upper-level undergraduate and graduate courses are offered on the USG campus, fostering a supportive environment of students focused on completing their degrees and advancing their careers*.

*Students start their college career at Montgomery College (or another community college) and transfer to USG to earn a four-year bachelor's degree from one of 9 Maryland Universities.

DUAL ENROLLMENT

The Dual Enrollment program is a partnership between Montgomery College (MC) and Montgomery County Public Schools (MCPS) that began in 2002.  One of the goals is to provide an opportunity for high-achieving students to challenge themselves and earn college credits while still in high school.  College professors from MC come to SVHS to teach courses during the regular school day.  Credits earned at MC may be transferred to other colleges or universities.

Students are concurrently enrolled as MC students, and course grades from the Dual Enrollment program appear on the student’s MC transcript.  Students may choose to have these MC courses also count towards their high school graduation requirements, and the grades may be counted as part of their weighted high school grade point average (WGPA).

Qualifications for Dual Enrollment:

Both MCPS and MC charge fees to students taking college courses, but Dual Enrollment classes are available at a reduced rate compared to the rates for a regular student at Montgomery College.  Financial assistance is available through MCPS and MC to students with demonstrated need.

Students may take one or two classes each semester.  Course offerings will vary from semester to semester.

National College Fair Update TBA

The Annual NACAC Montgomery County National College Fair is held locally during April. Admission is free. Over 300 colleges and trade schools are represented. All Juniors are given the opportunity to attend during the school day and school bus transportation is provided for a nominal fee. Parents are encouraged to attend the evening sessions with their children.

College Sports and the NCAA

So you want to play sports in college…Great!  Are you a QUALIFIER?  Do you have the required grade point average or SAT/ACT scores?  Have you taken the right "CORE" courses to qualify for Division I, II or III? What is the difference in these divisions? Can you qualify for a scholarship, a grant? When can you LEGALLY talk to the coach?

If you need help in answering these questions and learning about all the regulations, you need to pick up a copy of the NCAA Guide for the college-bound student-athlete in the College & Career Center. For additional information, visit www.ncaa.org.

Virtual Tours & Presentations

Due to the COVID situation, many campuses are closed for campus visits and/or tours.  We are also unsure of how representative visits will go in the fall.  We will do our best to hold virtual rep visits and will keep you updated which schools will be conducting sessions for Seneca Valley High School.  In the meantime, explore these sites to see virtual presentations and go on virtual tours of campus!  From there, we can address any questions directly with representatives.

Naviance

Naviance Student allows students to do college searches, compare institutions, make contact with colleges in which they are interested, and view scattergram data showing acceptance statistics of previous graduating classes of their own high school. Students can also build a resume, summarize post-secondary goals, and keep track of their college and scholarship applications. Students use Naviance Student to request and track transcripts and recommendations.
