COLLEGE SEARCH INFORMATION
Thinking about going to college? Not sure where to go or where to start?
Your best resource is to meet with your College/Career Information Coordinator. They will help you get organized, guide you through this process, and answer any questions you may have. These students thought they could not go to college because of the obstacles they faced cost, grades, responsibilities, and feeling overwhelmed. Sound familiar? Visit this website to hear their stories: youcango.collegeboard.org.
Additional Resources:
This is a general list of common required pieces of a college application.
Reminder to check each school’s application requirements as you prepare!
Application Form - Common App, School-specific application, Common Black App, etc.
Essay or writing sample - start early! Your chance to express yourself in writing. If possible, have an adult or English teacher review for editing.
Letters of Recommendation - from your counselor and your teacher(s)
Test Scores - students send directly to schools via SAT (College Board) & ACT
Check to see if schools of interest are test-optional for this fall
Fee or Fee Waiver Form (if you qualify) - check with your counselor; students on FARMS typically qualify for fee waivers.
Be on the lookout for fee waiver codes! Some schools offer application fee waivers at certain times of the year regardless of financial status. See your counselor or CCIC for more information.

Common Application - Explore more than 900 colleges
Coalition Application - 150 top colleges and universities committed to improving access to higher education

Application deadlines!
How many letters of recommendation do they require or accept?
How much is the application fee?
*Some eligible students may qualify for college application fee waivers (FARMS, etc). More information on this can be found later in this document.
Applying to Colleges!
Apply to college(s). Start working on applications with earliest deadlines first! Many schools have their application available on the Common Application. The Common Application works with over 1,000 colleges and universities.
If any colleges you are applying to are on the Common Application, you will need to create an account. When registering for the Common Application, make sure to use a personal, professional email that you check regularly. DO NOT use your MCPS email address! Why? MCPS email blocks messages from external, non-MCPS Senders!
Complete the following steps in Common App:
Add any Common App schools to your Common App account list of schools you’re applying to.
NOTE: The list of schools you have on Common App should match the list of schools you are applying to in Naviance!
Sign the FERPA Waiver (found on Common App) - More Information
Click on the “My Colleges” tab
Click on any of your colleges
Click on “Recommenders and FERPA”

Montgomery Scholars will launch their college studies at a fraction of the cost of most four-year schools. The College will award merit scholarships to each student admitted into the Scholars program. These Montgomery Scholars scholarships cover the cost of full-tuition and fees, for two years of study at Montgomery College (30 credits per year at the in-county resident tuition rate).
