Our counseling department is knowledgeable about the unique developmental needs of young adolescents, and we apply that knowledge to our work with students, staff, and families. Our counselors provide proactive leadership and advocacy to help students succeed academically, personally, and socially. We work with students in classrooms, in small groups, and individually to build key skills and to address specific concerns.
Select the appropriate courses for their academic and elective programs;
Become increasingly aware of their strengths and interests for future careers;
Cope with personal and social concerns;
Increase their ability to make choices and decisions; and
Develop positive self-awareness including personal safety.
Students may see counselors before school, during lunch, and after school. At other times, students should fill out a form requesting an appointment with their counselor. These forms are available from the Counseling Office secretary. Parents may call the Counseling Office to schedule meetings with counselors at 240-740-6460.
Students are encouraged to consider very carefully the courses being selected for the upcoming school year. The number of students selecting a course during registration determines the number of sections of that course that will be offered, and the staff assigned to this school. These decisions are made by June 1. After that time, it may not be possible to make a change in a student’s schedule. Schedule changes that are initiated after the school year begins are disruptive to the student’s educational program. Sometimes situations arise that require a schedule change. Schedule change requests based on teacher preference will not be considered. Our course-alike sections must be balanced. Please direct any questions to your child’s counselor.
Please contact Ms. Denise Perez, at Denise_F_Perez@mcpsmd.org. She will guide you through the documentation needed for these processes.
If a parent wishes to meet with a specific teacher, contact that teacher directly to schedule an appointment. If a parent wishes to set up a conference with several teachers or has an overall concern, contact your child’s counselor.
