Literacy

Students have literacy everyday for about 2 hours. During this time they have reading discussions and debates in whole group and small group settings. They read articles and stories from an anthology reader (unique to a Center Program setting) as well as novels (which are usually assigned around a particular theme). Students also practice their writing skills during this time with many different writing assignments over the course of a nine week marking period.

In the first marking period, students discuss heroism. Students guided reading groups centered around historical fiction novels. In second marking period, our theme was adventure and survival stories. Third marking period goes along with the William and Mary Curriculum for Higher Abled Readers and cycles are found and analyzed throughout all the books. By fourth marking period, students have moved on again and the book that is the cornerstone to this unit is Shakespeare Stealer.
