The ACT Tessera was given in Fall 2018. The results were used to help MMS Counselors conduct small group and individual workshops relating to the SEL skills.
Pack Time
Pack Time
Pack Time is a redesign initiative designed to build positive relationships between students and teachers. Every first and last day each week, the entire student body meets in small groups with a teacher for the first 15 minutes of the day. ALL students will be receiving Tier I support in regards to Tessera Constructs.
Capturing Kids' Hearts
Capturing Kids' Hearts
This is a whole school researched based curriculum that addresses the social emotional needs of our students and staff. Flip Flippen, the founder, states “If you have a student’s heart, you have their mind.” The purpose of Capturing Kids Hearts is to address the social emotional needs of the students and the adults in a school community. Capturing kids hearts has proven to improve attendance, reduce school discipline and bullying, increase academic performance, increase graduation rates, and increase teacher satisfaction. A component of Capturing Kids hearts is a class called Teen Leadership. This class lends itself to build the leadership capacity of students in the areas of personal responsibility, self-expression, and making good decisions when problems arise.
In August 2018, the entire USD 418 district was trained in implementing Capturing Kids' Hearts. Aspects of CKH in action at MMS:
- Greetings - As each student enters the classroom, teachers greet them with a smile and handshake or high-five.
- Good Things - At the beginning of each class, several students take turns sharing good things that are happening in their lives.
- Social Contracts - Each class created a student-driven social contract. Students came up with words representing how they want to be treated and how they want to treat each other.
- Classroom Management - Teachers were trained to use the same hand signals and questions to help keep their classrooms running smoothly.
