"The application process for this award started last year when McPherson Middle School was chosen to be part of the Mercury 7 schools and began to participate in the Kansans Can Redesign initiative. Civic Engagement was chosen as one of our focus areas from our vision statement of: 'Students will be future ready through balanced, personal learning.' The Civic Engagement team worked and researched the entire 2017-2018 school year documenting civic learning projects that met the criteria the award specified. MMS is thrilled to be able to be named a School of Excellence for three years with the goal to continue to grow and share civic engagement opportunities for our students."
Our first step toward connecting our students with the community is building knowledge and empathy with the McPherson community and the world. A redesign initiative that we are piloting during the spring semester is having every student watch CNN 10 during our Packademics time on the first and last days of the week. CNN 10 is a ten minute news reel designed for students to share national and international current events.
