Kristen Flak-Solom teaches 6-8th grade orchestra at Glacier Creek Middle School. Starting violin as a 5th grader, Mrs. Solom has always loved music and wanted to be an orchestra teacher since age 10. Growing up, she also studied piano and participated in choir from middle school through college. Mrs. Solom received her Bachelors of Art degree in Music Education from Luther College in Decorah, Iowa and her Masters of Art degree in Music Education from the University of St. Thomas in St. Paul, Minnesota.
Prior to teaching in Middleton-Cross Plains, Mrs. Solom taught 5-8th grade orchestra and 6th grade general music in Stoughton, Wisconsin. Outside of school, Mrs. Solom is a member of the Yahara String Quartet. She holds memberships in the National Association for Music Education and the American String Teachers Association. She is the current State Orchestra Chair for the Wisconsin Music Educators Association. In her free time, Mrs. Solom enjoys cooking, gardening, going on walks, playing board games, crafting, and reading.
Nancy Kurr teaches 5 grade orchestra at Glacier Creek and Kromrey Middle Schools. Her musical journey began on the viola in 4th grade in her hometown of Kenosha, WI. It took her to UW-Madison to obtain a degree in Viola Performance, a certification in Early Childhood Education, and then a certification in Instrumental Music Education. This past spring, she earned a Master of Science in Education from UW-La Crosse. While in the UW Symphony Orchestra, Mrs. Kurr met her “stand partner for life”, Mr. Steve Kurr, our Middleton High School Orchestra teacher. They live in Middleton with their children, Veronica and Thomas (both violists), and their dogs.
Prior to teaching in Middleton-Cross Plains, Mrs. Kurr taught orchestra in the Waunakee Community School District, was an adjunct string faculty member at Edgewood College, and taught adult string instruction through the UW-Continuing Studies. In her free time, she enjoys performing with Mrs. Flak-Solom in the Yahara String Quartet, and spending time outdoors with family and friends.
Eric Solberg teaches 6-8th grade orchestra at Kromrey Middle School. Before moving to Wisconsin from Minnesota, Mr. Solberg was a professional musician in the Twin Cities. He performed in many groups including symphony orchestras, broadway pits, jazz combos, a cover band, a casino show, a traveling puppet theater, a kayak ballet, and a picnic opera. He has been teaching Double Bass lessons for 25 years and has had many students who are now in professional orchestras. Mr Solberg grew up on a farm in North Dakota and now lives with his wife and two daughters in Madison. They enjoy the beautiful parks and playgrounds the area has to offer.
