5th Grade Orchestra

A 5th grade orchestra student can be:

• A student continuing to build on the skills they formed in 4th grade orchestra.

• A student who is new to orchestra and would like to learn the violin, viola, cello, or string bass.

• A student who has been taking private lessons and who would like a group experience.

• A student, continuing or new, who would like to learn the string bass.

Needed Supplies

• An instrument of proper size and good playing condition (see next page for more information)

• String Basics, Steps to Success for String Orchestra book 1 for your student’s instrument: specify violin, viola, cello, or bass.  

• Shoulder Rest or Sponge (Violin/Viola only)

• Rock Stop (Cello/Bass only)

• Rosin (included with instrument rentals)

• Music Stand for home practice

• Chromatic Clip-On Tuner (optional but highly encouraged - students will be using the Snark brand at school, but there are many options.

These supplies are also needed, and can be purchased from any school supply source:

• 1 inch Black Binder with clear plastic cover

• Pencil

• Soft Cleaning Cloth (Microfiber cloths, old t-shirts, sweatshirts, or socks work) 

Instruments and all materials listed above can be rented or purchased at a variety of locations. We suggest using one of our local music stores: Ward-Brodt Music or Heid Music. Please do not purchase an instrument online without first consulting your student’s orchestra teacher. While there are lots of good looking deals online, most are too good to be true and result in faulty instruments needing lots of repair.
