Need recommendations for shows or movies to watch? MHS teachers have you covered!

Ms. Lampada, Speech Language Pathology:

Little Fires Everywhere (Hulu) was a great book and TV show! It demonstrates many different perspectives of mental health and societal conflicts in the 90's.

Mr. Petersen, Band:

Unorthodox (Netflix), so different and i really learned a lot about orthodox jews. Back to the Future trilogy. That soundtrack is amazing.

Ms. Booth, Art:

The Princess Bride (Disney Plus) because it is a classic!

Mr. Ward, Social Studies:

Check out the documentary 13th (Netflix). The 13th amendment abolishes slavery “except as a punishment for crime.” This movie explores the impacts of this line on African-Americans post-slavery from convict leasing to the war on drugs to the rise of mass incarceration. If you want something less serious and hilarious just binge watch Arrested Development (Netflix).

Ms. Garvey, Math:

I love The Last Dance documentary that was just released on ESPN about Michael Jordan and the 1998 Chicago Bulls and their championship dynasty. I thought it did a really nice job diving into the background of how Michael Jordan, a kid who didn't make the varsity basketball team his sophomore year, transformed into MJ.

Mr. Hartson, Band:

A bit nerdy...but I've been watching Star Trek: The Next Generation (Netflix, Hulu) lately. It's 80s cheesy, but many of the stories are quite strong! Also, Patrick Stewart is fantastic. I also just finished the new season of Star Wars: The Clone Wars (Disney Plus). If you like the Star Wars Universe, this is a must! I also recommend Brooklyn Nine-Nine (Hulu).

Mr. Touhey, Social Studies:

I’ll limit myself to three recommendations. Jojo Rabbit is a funny, heartbreaking, wonderful film that was my favorite of 2019. It displays the highs and lows of humanity while ridiculing Nazism and the pointlessness and ignorance of hatred. My second recommendation - if you’re looking for sports and have already watched The Last Dance - is the Green Bay Packers Documentary: Legacy (Apple TV). It covers their entire history with episodes for each decade of the team’s existence. I especially enjoyed the 70’s and 80’s episodes because they gave me a better understanding of the pain my dad and uncles endured. It’s available through Packers.com. My last recommendation is the show Community (Netflix). Its recent arrival at Netflix finally gave me the opportunity to make up for the sin of not watching while it was on TV. The show has great characters and insane plots that draw you in while paying homage to pop culture’s various genres. Plus, it’s funny. Here’s hoping for a movie.

Ms. Tucker, English:

Great British Bake-Off (Netflix). The competition is fierce and the food makes you want to jump into the TV! Start with the later seasons hosted by Neil Fielding and Sandi Toksvig.

Mr. Jenkins, English:

Zoey's Extraordinary Playlist (Hulu). The show has elements on magical realism and some awesome music. It is all about coping with loss, so it works for catharsis.

Mr. McGrath, Social Studies:

I just started Superstore (Hulu), and I have laughed so hard at every episode that I have tears in my eyes. It's the funniest thing I've seen in years. It also makes me wish that NBC would only make sitcoms, because they're amazing at those (30 Rock, Friends, The Office, Parks & Rec, Scrubs, etc.) and truly, horrendously awful at literally everything else. I can't wait for next season's lineup to include hour-long dramas like Chicago Wastewater Treatment Plan" starring David Hasselhoff.

Mr. Fischer, Spanish:

As an old school Chicago Bulls fan and a person who is missing sports, The Last Dance, is a must see during this time. I do wish they would have released the whole series so I could have binged watch it; however, it is now something I look forward to each Sunday. Scottie Pippen has always been my guy and this series solidified how undervalued he was to the organization. At the time, I was so mad at him for sitting out and refusing to play, but looking back at things, I totally understand it. And I was one of those Bulls Fans who did not appreciate the Bulls gaining one of the Bad Boys, especially Dennis Rodman! The relationship highlighted last night between him, Scottie, MJ and Phil Jackson is making me realize that maybe, I was wrong in my being so mad about Dennis as Bull. As much as I am loving the series, the players have aged which can only mean, so I have I!(sigh).
