This past week McFarland officially entered winter with a big snow and COVID-19 is still keeping us from doing some of our favorite things. But that doesn’t mean that we have to be stuck inside our houses for the next few months. There are plenty of things that are still available and safe during these times. So let's get into the top 5 things to do to keep you sane this winter.
Winter Sports: It’s time to take advantage of the beautiful snow and head out to the slopes. Wilmot Mountain Ski Resort is a popular choice for skiing and snowboarding. About an hour and a half drive from McFarland, it can be a great little vacation for the family. There’s trails for all different skill levels, so the whole family can have fun. They’ve also changed their system to keep people safe from COVID. Masks are required and people must make reservations to allow for better social distancing. It’s a great way to get out, have fun, and stay safe.
Candlelight Hiking: Throughout winter in Wisconsin, there are plenty of days where hiking paths are lit up by candles for people to hike or ski through. On January 18, you can see this at Governor Dodge State Park. At the end of the hike there’s a big fire and hot chocolate. This is an experience you’ll be sure to remember. Check out the Governor Dodge website for more updates, and consider renting some snow shoes if this sounds fun to you.
Celebrate Winter Solstice: This winter we have to be a bit more innovative with how we celebrate holidays, and while most of the winter holidays are spent with family. December 21st is a good night to spend with friends. It’s the longest night of the year, and while we can’t all meet in person, it’s a great time to stay up late on Zoom with all your friends. There are plenty of games you can play online like Jackbox or even a classic game of Truth or Dare. Maybe even turn on a movie and share your screen to watch with your friends. You can have a big sleepover with all of your friends even if it is virtual.
Find Ways to Give Back: Whether it be through donations or volunteering, this is a sure fire way to make not only yourself feel better but to lift others up as well. You can donate to the local food pantry. If you know you’re not at high risk of COVID and have tested negative, you may want to volunteer at a homeless shelter or a soup kitchen during the holiday season like at Luke House in Madison.
Get cozy: The fact of the matter is that this winter is going to be a lot different than usual. We’ve all got to stay at home a bit more and keep to ourselves. So, it’s time to kick back with a mug of hot cocoa, sit around the fireplace with your family, and relax. Take care of yourselves. Take care of each other. And have a happy holidays.
