Second grade has art class two times a week, Tuesdays at 9:25 and Thursdays at 10:10. We use things like lines, shapes and colors to make our artwork interesting, and practice using many different art materials. We also learn how art and artists can help us understand more about God's world. I will be posting pictures of second grade artwork on this page all year, so parents, please visit often to see what your children have been doing in art class!
Second graders learned about artist Vincent Van Gogh and looked at his many paintings of sunflowers. We also looked at pictures of several different types of sunflowers. Students used oil pastels or markers and watercolors to create still life drawings of sunflowers in a vase, emphasizing the texture of the sunflowers and creating the illusion of 3-dimensional space in the composition of their drawings.

Second graders worked with clay and the elements of shape and texture to create these colorful fish.

Second graders are working on monochromatic paintings using a single color mixed with white to create lighter tints and with black to create darker shades.
Students worked on an inside/outside window drawing to practice using the element of space in their artwork.
Background first: Second graders created colorful background designs on paper using colored tissue paper and water. After their papers dried, they removed the tissue paper and made black ink line drawings on top of the colored backgrounds. Some students incorporated the tissue paper shapes into their drawings, while others created drawings that contrasted with the random shapes in the background.

Second graders made pinch pots out of clay, then created lids to fit them. After their pinch pots were fired the students painted them with glazes to make them colorful, shiny, and waterproof.
1.c. I can demonstrate improvement in my coordination and development of skills in the use of basic visual art tools and materials.
Second graders learned about creating space in their artwork using size and placement. They are working on drawings that include multiple Chinese lanterns in a space or setting.
Second graders cut and assembled slabs of clay to create angel ornaments for Christmas. They finished their ornaments by painting them with acrylics. Their beautiful angels were ready to bring home in time for Christmas.

God has created people with the gift of creativity. Second graders looked at the way many different artists painted the sun, and saw that although the subject was the same all the paintings were different and unique. The students created their own drawings and paintings of the sun, using materials, styles, and colors that they chose.

Second graders started with leaf shapes, added lines inside of them to show texture, and more lines to connect the edges of the leaf to the border. They used markers and water to give their drawings a watercolor effect.
The second grade students made these leaf-shaped bowls by pressing real leaves onto slabs of clay, cutting out the shapes, and carefully placing them on top of inverted bowls to make 3-dimensional forms. After the leaf bowls were fired in the kiln, the students applied glazes, then they had to be fired again. The kiln transformed the glazes from dull and chalky to smooth, shiny, and colorful. It took a lot of waiting, but we were happy with the results!

Second graders studied the lines and textures of leaves by first making rubbings, then tracing the edges and interior lines of some of the leaves. Then some of the students drew one or two of the leaves by observing and recording the lines with a pencil.

The second grade students are working with the art element of space to create an imaginary underground world. They started with a "ground line" high up on the paper and drew an outdoor scene, then used most of the page to show what was happening underneath the ground. They included animals with either real or imaginary living spaces.
Second graders worked with the art elements of shape, form, and value and created paintings of imaginary robots. They used white and darker values of their colors to create the illusion of shadows and reflections, making the robots appear 3-dimensional.

Second graders are looking at lines and shapes in the world around them, and practicing the skill of drawing through observation. This week they built towers with blocks, then drew the shapes they saw in front of them.

We are continuing to use lines, shapes, and colors to create artwork. Students drew buildings with geometric shapes, then used glue to create raised lines. Then they filled in the shapes inside the lines with brightly colored chalk pastels. It was a fun and colorful way to try out some new art materials!
Second graders looked at the work of Swiss artist Paul Klee, and how he expressed his ideas using shapes and colors. They created oil pastel drawings based on Klee's painting, "Cat and Bird." They drew the cats using simple shapes, then filled the shapes with blended oil pastels, mixing and combining colors to make new ones.

Second graders are working on several projects inspired by Paul Klee's work in which they are focusing on lines, shapes, colors, and space in their artwork. In this project, they used letters to form shapes within squares, then filled the space inside and around the letters with colors.

Second graders began these tempera paintings with three different-sized dots. They then went on to use their own ideas to fill the rest of the paintings with colors, shapes, and textures. The resulting paintings turned out colorful, interesting, and beautiful!
