Fifth grade has art class once a week, Tuesdays from 1:00-2:00. We use the elements (lines, shapes, colors, etc.) and the principles of art (balance, emphasis, contrast, etc.) to make artwork that is interesting and well-designed, and practice using many different types of art materials. We also learn about how art and artists can help us understand more about God's world. I will be posting pictures of fifth grade artwork on this page, so parents, please visit often to see what your children have been doing in art class!
Fifth graders created mixed media self-portraits by first painting a watercolor resist background that described some things about themselves, then creating a self-portrait line drawing on clear plastic that was placed over the colored background.Â

Fifth graders looked at the work of Dutch artist M.C. Escher and worked with the art principles of pattern and rhythm to create tessellation designs from repeated shapes.Â

Fifth grade students worked with a variety of materials and many of the art elements and principles to create a set of nature-themed prints. It involved a lot of steps and some trial and error, but the results were interesting and beautiful!

Fifth graders have been working on composition in artwork using the elements of shape and space and the principles of balance, contrast, and emphasis. They used cropping tools to create an interesting balance of positive and negative shapes in their designs.Â

Students worked with clay, using several methods including pinch pots, slab construction, and modeling, to create bobblehead sculptures.Â
Fifth graders looked at some ways that artists use their work to express their ideas. Sometimes the artist has a theme, or idea, that he/she wants to express, and chooses subjects, colors, styles, etc. to express that idea. The students were all given the same title for a piece of artwork ("Explore"), then chose their own way to illustrate that theme.
1.a. I can create two- and three-dimensional works of art that are inspired by my own ideas, interests, points of view, environment, and community.
1.d. I can demonstrate the proper use of visual art tools and mediums appropriate to the current project.
Fifth graders looked at the painting American Gothic by Grant Wood, then created their own versions, keeping the painting's composition but changing the characters and some of the background objects.
1.e. I can create art in the same style as a professional artist or movement and identify connections to the original work.
Fifth graders are working on parodies of Grant Wood's American Gothic. Â They are creating their own versions of the painting, keeping the painting's composition but changing the characters and some of the background objects..
The fifth graders have been working on some Op Art drawings in which they are trying different methods of creating 3-D effects and the illusion of movement. In these drawings they drew spheres that appear 3-dimensional and used lines in the background to create the illusion of movement toward a center point.

The fifth graders created cylinder-shaped containers from clay slabs, and added surface texture by drawing and pressing objects into the clay. After their slab containers were fired in the kiln, the students applied colored glazes, and then they were fired again. The glazes added color and a smooth, shiny surface to the clay.

1.d. I can demonstrate the proper use of visual art tools and mediums appropriate to the current project.
Fifth graders used lines to create the illusion of form and texture in these mixed media still life drawings of cacti. Color was added to the drawings with oil pastel blended with baby oil, and watercolor was used for the background.

Fifth graders looked at the sculptures of artist Claes Oldenburg and learned that changing something's scale in artwork can help us see things in different ways. They created these drawings in which small, common objects are drawn in a larger scale and placed in interesting settings.

Fifth graders are beginning their final year of elementary art classes. For their first project they worked on designs that include their names, repetition, and radial symmetry.
