Student Dress Code Policy (Effective FA2023)

Milwaukee Area Technical College

Healthcare Pathway: Registered & Practical Nursing Programs

DRESS CODE POLICY

The nursing uniform serves as a means of identification and must be worn in accordance with school policy.   The Healthcare Pathway Student Handbook outlines the dress code as the following:  Students must comply with the dress code for the classroom, lab and clinical/simulation/field placement sites.  Note that some clinical agencies have policies that differ from our dress code policy. Students are to follow the dress code policy that is more restrictive for their clinical site.

In addition to above, the nursing programs have identified additional professional dress and behavioral standards for which students will be held accountable during clinical/simulation/field placement:

1. The MATC nursing uniform includes a patriot blue scrub V-neck top  and bottoms. Jogger pants are acceptable as long as they fit well and reach the student’s shoes.  Uniform pants should not drag on the floor.  For women wearing a uniform skirt, the minimum length must be at the knee.

2. All uniforms will have the MATC logo embroidered on the left chest area of the scrub top.

3. Uniforms must be clean, pressed, non-revealing and fit properly.  Uniforms should be free of odor (i.e. smoke, pets, cooking ).

4. MATC nursing uniforms are to be worn only at clinical, lab, simulation, home health, community or preceptorship experiences. The uniform should not be worn in the community, during non-MATC shadowing experiences or at the student’s place of employment.

5. A solid white or patriot blue shirt that is clean and in good repair may be worn under the scrub top.

6. A patriot blue scrub jacket may be worn over the uniform.

7. Plain, clean socks must be worn with scrub pants or joggers.

8. White or natural color nylons or leggings must be worn with a uniform skirt.

9. Clean shoes (including white athletic shoes) are to be worn by all students. No open toe or open heeled shoes, non-porous canvas or mesh shoes  (leather is preferred) or high heels are permitted.

10. Head coverings (hijab/niqab/khimar) may be worn for religious purposes.  The head covering material should be without pattern and in a corresponding color to the uniform.

11. Hair must be clean, neat, and fastened back off the face and collar when in uniform.

12. Beards and mustaches must be neat and trimmed.

13. Hats, caps or bright colored/patterned headbands are not allowed.

14. Fingernails are to be kept short and clean. Artificial nails of any kind, including gels and dips, or nail designs are not allowed. Nail polish should be intact and not chipped.

15. Any use of facial make-up should be minimal, professional and neutral in color.

16. Daily personal hygiene measures must be practiced.  Deodorant  is recommended.  Cologne/aftershave/lotions/perfume should not be used.

17. The student’s MATC ID badge (Stormer ID) should be worn on a retractable reel or in a clear plastic clip-on cover.  Lanyards are not allowed in the clinical setting.

18. Cell phones are not to be used in patient care areas.

19. Gum chewing is not permitted in the clinical setting, labs or simulation.

20. Role appropriate attire is to be worn at community clinical agencies  as directed by the clinical instructor. Students may not wear jeans, scarves, tee shirts, high heels, sandals, tightly fitting or revealing garments.  Minimal jewelry should be worn.

21. Tattoos with profane language or offensive images must be covered during clinical, simulation and field placement.

22. Body piercings must be covered during clinical, simulation and field placement.

23. Facial jewelry (e.g. eyebrow, tongue or nose) must not be worn during clinical, simulation or field placement.  Solid ear gauges may be worn as long as they are flesh-tone in color.

24. A single, small earring may be worn in each ear.  A single ring, such as a wedding or engagement band with no stones, may be worn.
