Third grade library media curriculum focuses on information skills, fostering responsible independence in both the selection and use of information as well as technology. Students are expected to use the OPAC with the Dewey Decimal Classification System to locate materials and work to create the self-sufficiency and the confidence needed to allow students to find things for themselves. Literature studies focus on fiction/nonfiction and folktales (Legends, Tall-Tales, and Myths, notable authors and artists).

Course Competencies:

    • Retrieve a fiction book by author

    • Retrieve a nonfiction book about a particular subject using a call number

    • Master log-in procedures for all school technology

    • Apply appropriate research skills, internet safety skills

    • Practice guided inquiry research in small groups

    • Compare and contrast specified sources of information

    • Explain which source meets an identified need

    • Utilize a variety of electronic sources

    • Utilize the school library media center regularly for recreational reading and reference materials.
