First grade learns how to check out books, locate materials, identify parts of the book and story elements, sequence stories, differentiate fiction from non-fiction, and write a story. Literature studies focus on fiction/nonfiction, folktales, notable authors, and illustrators.

First Grade Course Competencies:

    • Demonstrate the appropriate care and handling of materials

    • Follow the policies of the school library media center

    • Demonstrate a working knowledge of the alphabet

    • Identify a specific area of the Everybody section when given a specific letter of the alphabet

    • Identify the basic parts of a book (cover, spine, pages, title, author, illustrator, title page)

    • Classify items into nonfiction or fiction categories

    • Sequence events after listening to a story

    • Respond to picture graphics relating to a story through the arts, discussion, or writing

    • Work as a whole group learning guided inquiry research practices

Expectations:

  • Listen and follow directions the first time you are asked.

  • Show respect by using kind words and actions and taking care of the library's property.

  • Be safe by keeping your hands, feet, and objects to yourself.

  • Participate.
