Music Theory is defined as “the study of the fundamental elements of music, including how they are used to create, analyze, and interpret music”. In this class, students will be able to implement higher-level musical language and grammar skills including musical notation, harmonic analysis, and part writing which will lead to a thorough understanding of music composition and music theory. This will include in-depth learning of scales, modes, chords, intervals, harmony, melody, etc. Students will practice and obtain ear training skills, as well as the skills required for sight reading musical literature. These skills will be transferred to singing as well. They will be able to recognize the development of music from a historical and cultural perspective and extend musical awareness beyond music currently familiar to the student. Students who enroll in Music Theory should expect challenging, advanced, individual work. If you’re a musician looking to deepen your understanding of how music works, then Music Theory is the class for you!
