Sudden Cardiac Arrest (SCA) is a condition in which the heart abruptly stops functioning due to an electrical disturbance. This disruption in function stops blood flow to the brain and vital organs. The cause of SCA in athletes is unknown, however, young athletes with underlying heart conditions are at a greater risk during vigorous exercise. Sudden Cardiac Arrest can result in death if not treated within minutes. The Center for Disease Control (CDC) estimates that this condition results in the deaths of 2,000 young people under the age of 25 per year.
Prior to participation in athletics, it is mandatory for student-athletes to undergo an annual pre-participation physical exam. During your child's exam, urge your health care professional to screen for cardiovascular issues. An electrocardiogram (ECG) can detect underlying cardiac issues that put student-athletes at risk.
The athletic trainer is present at the majority of practices and contests, and has extensive training in emergency response. All of our coaches and volunteers are certified in first aid and CPR, and have Emergency Action Plans in place. All in-season teams carry their own AED's, as well as the public access AED located in the main lobby of MHS.
