What is a Rube Goldberg Machine?

A Rube Goldberg Machine is an overly complicated contraption or machine that conducts a simple task. We in the Markham MakerSpace are inviting you to create a 4-12 step Rube Goldberg machine that passes the motion around your house.

What is the Challenge?

We in the MakerSpace are inviting each house to create a Rube Goldberg Machine that passes the motion of the machine around the house. Whichever House has the most steps in their machine wins.

The aim of the competition is to have as many participants as possible. Each participant can make and video their Rube Goldberg Machine which would involve 4-12 steps

What is a step in a Rube Goldberg Machine?

Anything that moves momentum, this could be dominos falling over, a lever changing motion, a ball rolling down the stairs or anything moving from one place to another. If you need some inspiration then there are lots of ideas on youtube!

Rules for this Markham Inter-House Competition:

  1. One house captain must start the machine, the other house captain must finish the machine (which means raising or opening the house flag).

  2. You need to record in landscape 4-12 steps of the machine and send it to your House Captain, who will then compile the whole video.

  3. The House with the most steps wins the MakerSpace Cup!!

Tips on Making your video:

  1. Be creative, anything could be used for or within the machine. Literally anything

  2. Be inclusive. Include family, include your pets if you really want to!

  3. Be Careful! If you’re not sure about something then ask a parent or someone you live with.
