We in the Markham MakerSpace have started to put together a list of interesting Maker projects that you could do at home.

Some use more resources than others but all are interesting and fun to make and do!

Weekly Challenge

You probably know what a catapult is. In the Middle Ages armies would use them to hurl stones at castle walls. But did you know about an even bigger type of medieval siege weapon called a trebuchet? Try this project to build a miniature version!

Homemade Marble Run

A big piece of cardboard, some material from the recycling bin, a hot glue gun/tape, and a marble (or something round) are all you need to engineer a marble run. This example uses a little high tech help, but that's just an extra.


MakeCode Simulators

Microsoft's MakeCode is a blocks-based coding environment for various devices. It also includes a simulator, meaning you can code a project and see it run even if you don't have that particular device.

Make your own custom pinball machine

The Pinbox3000 takes about an hour to build by following a great assembly video. (MS students can assemble on own with a little guidance.) Then, you can customize the play surface. Include obstacles, ramps, spinners, and even electronics.

All you need is some cardboard, paper and a pair of scissors, have fun!

Build A Wind Powered Car

All you need is:

  • Card Board

  • Wooden Skewers X3

  • Straws X2

  • Bottle Caps X4

  • Tape

  • Scissors

  • Fan

Follow the tutorial then modify your car to see how fast it will travel over 2 Meters


Build A Paper Roller Coaster

Materials you will require are

  • Scissors

  • Paper

  • Cardboard

  • Tape

  • Marbles

How high and long can you make your roller coaster?

  • A few sheets of paper

  • X-acto knife or box cutter

  • Pencil

  • Rinsed out Tetrapak cartons (soy vida, jugos etc.)
