250 FACE-sHIELDs donated to peruvian hospitals - 24th April 2020

Today we donated 250 face-shields to hospitals in Peru through MINSA, the Ministry of Health.

Wow! What a whirlwind week! With our permits being granted on Monday; in 5 days we have far surpassed our initial target of 150 face-shields!

I want to say a huge thank you to Mr Kemp, Ms Corrigan, Ms Wyncoll, Mr Burns, Mr Eades and Mr Moya. The Markham Trust and Claudia Espejo have also been incredibly supportive with our project.

We need your help, we have added a "How I can help" tab to our MakerSpace website. In short we need helping sourcing materials, finding laser cutters, funding our project, making fabric face masks and spreading the word. If you can help on any of these fronts please contact Mr Brown on jeremy.brown@markham.edu.pe

Thank you again for the love and support that the Markham Community has shown our project. We feel very proud to be part of this fantastic school!

FACE SHIELD MAKING AT MARKHAM - 20th April 2020

The DT-MakerSpace team has been granted permission from the Ministry of Health to make face shields for hospitals in Peru.

After many days reviewing different design specifications for different face shields; today was our first day in school and back in the workshop!

Our aim for our first day was to trial and prototype a range of face shield designs, using a range of materials that we know we had in both DT and the MakerSpace. After a morning's work we settled on a design that uses the polypropylene from the back of DT folders and connects to a laminated sheet. This laminated sheet needs to go through a laminator to make it clear. Once assembled you have a face shield that can be dismantled, easily cleaned and reused.

The polypropylene is first laser cut into strips with clips. The 2D laser cutting files used were originally designed by our ex-head of DT Andrew Mason, however we edited these to fit the polypropylene folders that we have in stock. We are currently searching for polypropylene suppliers here in the Peru. If you know of any then please get in touch!

Through collaboration and teamwork, in one day we have created a production line that has produced 35 faceshields in an afternoon. I am incredibly proud of the team today and want to thank Ms Corrigan, Mr Eades, Mr Kemp, Mr Burns, Ms Wyncoll and Mr Moya for all of their hardwork! We want to say a special thanks to the Markham Trust who have supported this initative from it's conception.

We will be posting further updates throughout the week, but for more immediate updates follow @markhammakerspace on Instagram.

Thank you.
