SDG Project
This week, our class has been buzzing with excitement as we learned all about the importance of bees and the vital role they play in our environment. We began by reading 'The Honeybee', which helped us explore how bees contribute to our everyday lives in surprising ways. One of our favourite facts was that "the bees make honey for us to eat", a delicious gift from nature!
We were also amazed to learn that bees produce wax, which is used to make candles. "If there was a power cut we would have no candles to light without bees. We would be in the dark!" This helped us see just how much we rely on these tiny creatures for more than just honey.
Our learning continued with a fascinating look at the process of pollination. We discovered that when bees visit flowers, "the pollen sticks to their legs" and helps grow "baby flowers". We also found out how honey is made: "The bees suck the nectar and chew it and spit it and then it makes honey".
We explored the different roles bees play within the hive. To celebrate the amazing work bees do, we enjoyed tasting a variety of delicious fruits, vegetables, and honey, foods that bees help produce through pollination. We were shocked to discover that bees are in danger and need our help. The children gave some wonderful suggestions on how we can help:
"We can plant more flowers so the bees have more nectar to suck."
"We can make bug hotels so bees have more places to live."
"Farmers spray the vegetables so the bugs don't eat them but the spray hurts the bees. Maybe they can use a net to cover the vegetables instead."
It’s been inspiring to see how many ideas the children had for saving the bees, and how passionate they are about protecting our pollinating friends.
Please ensure your child has a named PE kit in school. Our PE days are Tuesdays and Fridays, but the children are required to bring it in on Monday and we will send it home on Friday due to the nature of our inquiry based learning.
