Central idea: Celebrations can enhance the way we see the world.
We’ve had a fantastic and exciting start to Module 2! This term, we are learning about how celebrations can enhance the way we see the world. Throughout the week, we have been exploring different celebrations and thinking about what makes them special. We began by looking at objects from a variety of celebrations and sharing our own favourites. Some of our wonderful reflections included:
“I love Halloween because we get sweets.”
“I love Christmas because Santa comes and I give my Daddy presents.”
“I love my birthday because I get yummy cake.”
In our writing lessons, we have been reading Kipper’s Birthday and reflecting on what happens at a party. We were so excited to discover that we each had a little present to open and inside were some sweets! We talked about how opening the present made us feel and what the sweets tasted like to help inspire our writing. Some of our fantastic descriptions included: “The hard sweet was delicious.” and “The bright red sweets were yummy.” What wonderful describing words Year 1!
We then spent time thinking about the celebrations that happen at home and school. “I celebrate my work because I show my learning to Mrs Mason.” and “I feel happy when I learn to ride my bike.” It has been lovely to see how children recognise and value the special moments in their lives.
We also learned about the Harvest Festival and enjoyed tasting lots of delicious fruits and vegetables. It was interesting to discover where these foods come from and to reflect on how grateful we are to have such wonderful food. We discussed why the Harvest Festival is such an important time for communities to come together and give thanks.
In Maths, we have been learning about parts and wholes. The children shared their understanding beautifully: “A whole is all the things put together.” and “The parts are a little bit of a whole.” We have been using part whole models to develop our understanding that two parts make one whole.
