Final Spring 2023 Charles J. Garrett, Jr. Memorial Scholarship.pdf

Charles J. Garrett, Jr. Memorial Scholarship

Charles J. Garrett, Jr. (“Chuck”), 64, a Marblehead resident and longtime youth sports coach,

died on March 8, 2021 after several years of advancing cognitive and physical dementia-related

challenges. Created through many generous contributions by family and friends, this

scholarship honors his lifetime. No doubt he would be humbled yet pleased by this named

award benefitting a Marblehead graduating senior with their educational pursuits.

Chuck’s life exemplified hard work balanced with community, friends, and family. Part-time and

summer jobs, grants, scholarships, and perseverance enabled Chuck to become the first in his

family to attend college and graduate as an industrial engineer. Later, while working full-time, he

earned a Master of Business Administration degree. For almost 40 years, Chuck enjoyed

serving in increasingly responsible purchasing and manufacturing executive roles in the aircraft

engine industry. Outside of the work he loved, Chuck coached youth soccer with the same

enthusiasm, dedication, and passion. He enjoyed helping Marblehead’s children play soccer

and have fun together, as one community, regardless of the school they attended. A competitor,

Chuck was always ready for a challenge, especially when engaged in his favorite pastimes:

volleyball, golf, and skiing. A proud family man as well, Chuck’s sons are Marblehead High

School graduates currently engaged in the fields of renewable and sustainable energy and

cardiovascular research, respectively. His wife is a former youth soccer board volunteer, high

school special education staff member, labor and employment attorney, and higher education

administrator and educator.

A $2,500 scholarship award will be awarded to a recipient that demonstrates the following

criteria:

● Current Marblehead high school senior graduating in June 2023, defined for purposes of

this scholarship consideration as a graduating senior:

○ attending Marblehead High School regardless of their home address, or

○ attending a public or private high school outside of Marblehead, i.e., a day

student, with a Marblehead home address, or

○ attending a public or private high school outside of Marblehead, i.e., a boarding

student, with a Marblehead home address

Note: home address is where the student resides with their parent(s) or guardian(s)

● Cumulative grade point average of at least 3.0 or cumulative average of 80%

● Past or present Marblehead Youth Soccer Association participation (any role and any

time amount, e.g., clinic participant, team member, coach, referee, or clinic leader)

● Pursuing post high school educational studies in the field of science, technology,

engineering, or mathematics (need not be at a college or university, other accredited or

licensed programs are included such as training in related trades)

Applications must be accompanied by the scholarship application form, resume, unofficial transcript, and a cover letter describing how the applicant demonstrates the criteria.

Completed applications should be submitted to: cjgmemorialscholarship@gmail.com. No late applications will be considered.

The recipient will be chosen by Charles J. Garrett, Jr. Memorial Scholarship Committee.
