The Arms Around Sophia Scholarship

The Town of Marblehead gave so much support to our family while Sophia was sick. The students in this town went above and beyond to put their Arms Around Sophia in so many ways. This scholarship is our way of giving back to those who gave so much. This $1,000 scholarship is in memory of Sophia Smith. Awarded recipients must provide a course schedule each year while attending college in order for the scholarship funds to continue.

Our Family lost Sophia in November of 2018, after a brave battle with cancer. Prior to getting sick and all throughout her treatments, during good days and bad, Sophia’s passion was art. She used it to take her mind off a bad day, create something for someone she loved, or just for the love of creating. Whether it be through photography, paint, crayons, or pencils – anything that took her into a world where colors did not need to be coordinated or questioned to be beautiful. We were so lucky to be able to see the world through her eyes while she was here, and still see it in all the beauty she left us with. This passion was a huge part of who Sophia was, how she reacted to others and the world around her. I have no doubt it would have continued to play a big part in her life no matter where that path led her.

Please include an essay to answer the following:
What is your passion and how has it played a role in your life so far? Where do you see it leading you as you begin a new chapter? This does not have to be something you excel at or are particularly known for, but something that has affected your life, choices you have made and the role it will play in your future.
