Assessment, formative or summative, shapes our feedback and instruction. Intentionally using assessment to collect evidence of student thinking, and consider how that evidence will drive our next instructional moves and the feedback we will give to students is a practice at the core of teaching. It is how we move students from where they are, to where we want them to be on their learning path.
