Western Edge Youth Arts works across Melbourne’s western suburbs, providing space for young people to come together to tell their own stories, in their own way and with their own voice. By providing a safe space to explore creativity, learn new artistic practices, and develop leadership skills, WEYA constructs supportive pathways for young people to achieve their own creative agency.
The 20-week artists’ residencies culminate in artistically excellent theatrical performances by students for their communities. Projects are staffed with a team of highly qualified teaching-artists in drama, dance, music, creative writing, digital art/ film, physical theatre and design. Curriculum relevant content is negotiated with teachers and delivered in collaborative partnerships.
The program delivers learning outcomes in English, The Arts, Critical and Creative Thinking and Ethical Capabilities. They also support and improve students wellbeing by increasing resilience and building connections between schools and the communities they serve, through vibrant, innovative performances.
Each year, WEYA works with students from Manor Lakes Secondary to perform unique productions that provide an opportunity for students to communicate ideas through performance. So far our students have performed an adaptation of Macbeth in 2018 and Romeo & Juliet in 2019.
