Week Beginning: 9th December 2024
To round up our unit on "Ourselves & Our Community" we hosted a sharing event and a food festival for the people in our communities. Our families came to class and enjoyed food we had prepared during the day and had the chance to look at our art work, home learning projects and artefacts from the past. It was amazing sharing our learning with our families!
Week Beginning: 2nd December 2024
This week, Year 1 went on a trip to the Museum of the Home. Here we were able to see artefacts and rooms from the past. We explored how people used to live in their homes. We were able to touch items from the past and explore different rooms and find new things within them. We really enjoyed looking at computers and technology from the past including playing older games. We had a great time and are very thankful to all the adults who came to help us on our first museum trip!
Week Beginning: 25th November 2024
In English, we have been creating our own poems around fireworks night. We used our senses to expeirence the sights and sounds of fireworks, bonfires and sparklers. To help us with this, we went into the playground and each had the chance to hold a sparkler and make patterns in the sky. We listened to the crackle and pop of the sparkers and looked at the glittering and shining patterns they made. It was a lot of fun!
Week Beginning: 18th November 2024
This week, Year 1 have been looking at Ordinal Numbers. These are the positions people and things can be found. We have done running races outside to find out who came first, second and third. We then used resources in the classroom to create traffic jams and see which car was first in the queue and use our oracy skills to discuss and explain the positions of the other cars in the queue as well.
Week Beginning: 11th November 2024
This week is Anti-Bullying week in the UK and in Year 1 we celebrated by wearing Odd Socks. We learnt about what bullying is and how we can make sure it never happens in our class or our school. We all made pledges to explain how we will show respect to others and talked about how we feel when people show respect to us. Mr Fortune was very impressed with our discussion and how well we worked as a community.
Week Beginning: 4th November 2024
As part of our preperation for the Year 1 Food Festival at the end of this term we have been discussing different fruits and vegetables. As a class we came up with a list of our favourites and showed this information using a human pictogram. We sat in lines behind our favourite choice. As you can see in the picture we really like peppers in 1 Seacole!
Week Beginning: 21st October 2024
In science, Year 1 were investigating if certain materials will float or sink. To test this we started by discussing it with our team and making a prediction about which materials would float or not. We then carried out our experiment by placing the different materials in water and seeing if they stayed on the surface (float) or went below (sink). This helped us to sort the materials into a table so we knew which float and which sink.
Week Beginning: 14th October 2024
As part of our learning in RE we took a trip to St John's Church. We have been talking about how people show they belong. At the church we learnt from Rev. Young that Christians show they belong through a baptism. We had the chance to see what one looked like and to explore the church for the symbols that are important to Christian People.
Week Beginning: 7th October 2024
Year 1 have been investigating Everyday Materials in Science this half-term. We conducted an experiment together to test which materials are waterproof and which absorb water instead. We set up our experiment working hard to make sure it was a 'fair test'. We discovered that plastic would make the best material for Mr Fortune to make his new rain jacket out of.
Week Beginning: 30th September 2024
This week we began looking at number bonds. In class we used counters to create our bonds. But outside on the playground we became the counters and were able to split ourselves up in lots of different ways just like we split the numbers up on the number bond into it's parts. We had lots of fun bringing our maths to life out in the playground!
Week Beginning: 23rd September 2024
In Year 1 we have been looking at the artistic style of Paul Klee. We have been discussing the difference between hot and cold colours and how they can be linked to different feelings. We followed Paul Klee's style by making two abstract self-portraits using hot and cold colours in our sketch books. Our plan is to pick our favourites and use water colours to create our own masterpieces, so watch this space for more!
Week Beginning: 16th September 2024
In science, Year 1 have been learning about Everyday Materials. In the playground we went on a hunt to find objects made of a variety of materials as well as deciding which objects where natural and which were man-made. We had a lot of fun running around finding objects with our friends and learnt a lot about where some materials come from in nature.
Week Beginning: 9th September 2024
This week Year 1 have been learning about Counting to 10 using numbers and objects. We did some amazing learning in the classroom but we love being outside so we took the classroom into the playground. Working together we used chalk to create numberlines and to find enough objects from nature to fill each part of the line. We had a lot of fun and did some amazing learning along the way! An amazing first week of Year 1!
