Spring 2 - Dinosaurs
We have spent the last week of term learning about the festival of Easter. We read the Easter story and had great fun playing with the plastic eggs, straw and chicks. We practised our counting with them and hid the chicks inside the eggs for our friends to find. We practised our fine motor skills by making made Easter baskets and finished the week by having an egg hunt in the classroom.
We invited our parents to come in and help us make Easter bonnets. There were some very creative hats made!
We had a big surprise when we came to school on Monday as we found some dinosaur eggs in a nest in our classroom. We made our own representations of baby dinosaurs on our egg pictures. On Thursday, during cooking, we developed our fine motor skills by crushing biscuits and mixing them with cream cheese. We then rolled them into balls to make dinosaur eggs.
We have learnt a song about dinosaurs and we are getting very good at doing the 'Dinosaur stomp' dance.
We have finished our topic about dinosaurs by making a poster and an adult scribing all the information we have learnt over the last term.
We also had another surprise this week outside in the garden. We have now got a new climbing A frame which the children have made great use of. This will help them to develop their gross motor skills as they play on it.
In maths we have been learning to count out the correct number of objects for a given number .
Our focus this week has been measuring. We have have been using lots of different objects to measure with both inside and outside the classroom. We kept to our topic of dinosaurs and used unifix cubes to measure dinosaurs and the boys were very enthusiastic about measuring the classroom using dinosaur feet. During group time we used a variety of objects to measure ourselves and carried on with this outside in the garden.
We have also been very busy making Mother's Day cards and gifts for our mums. The children made their own representations of flowers in a vase and then filled small bags with lavender from the garden.
Friday was Red Nose Day and we all came to school in our pyjamas. we have also been learning about how important sleep is to keep our bodies healthy.
This week we have been thinking about why there are no dinosaurs on the earth today and how we know that they existed. The children have become paleontologists and have been digging for bones and examing them in the sand area. They were very excited to go outside and see if they could find any fossils in the outdoor area. They also made skeleton pictures of a Tyrannosaurus rex by cutting out the pieces and joining them back together.
In the garden we had great fun cleaning the dinosaurs using toothbrushes. and indoors we have been develing our fine motor skills by rescuing small dinosaurs from the swamp using tweezers. On the IWB we have been drawing our own representations of dinosaurs.
In our Jigsaw lesson we learnt about what foods we need to eat to keep healthy. Afterwards we cut up some tomatoes, cucumber and lettuce and made ourselves healthy salad sandwiches.
In maths we have been learning to count out a given number from a larger group and some of us have been learning to order numbers.
This week we have been learning some of the dinosaur names and what type of food they eat. Some of the children are already very knowledgeable with the names of the dinosaurs. During group time we sorted the dinosaurs into herbivores and carnivores. We have made sponge print representations of dinosaurs and on the maths table we have been cutting out dinosaurs and putting the numbers in the correct order.
Our Jigsaw lessons this term are about keeping our bodies healthy. This week we have been learning about the importance of exercise. We made our own obstacle course and took turns in trying to complete it as fast as possible. We then came back inside and laid down to cool down our bodies.
To develop our tripod grip ready for writing the children have been using pipettes to squeeze water into the tube and then squeeze it out into the ice cube trays.
The children had great fun dressing up on Friday for World Book Day. They took part in our whole school parade and enjoyed reading books with their friends..
The children returned to school after the half term break to find their classroom had been taken over by dinosaurs. They left their large footprints around the room and were found hiding in lots of our play areas. The children were very excited and some of us already know many of the names of the dinosaurs.
We found dinosaurs that had been trapped by poachers and needed rescuing. We made ourselves dinosaur masks so that we could become friends with the dinosaurs and then collaged some pictures of dinosaurs.
During free play the boys have shown lots of interest in the cars and were developing their own racing track. With support, they found sounds on a sound mat and were able to write the words 'start' and 'finish' to make signs for their race track. They also made a flag to wave off the drivers and a trophy for the winners. Outside in the garden the sandpit became a lava pit and the children had to find a way of getting over the lava withput being burnt. They made their own bridge using the sand toys.
Our Jigsaw lesson this week was all about keeping our body healthy by doing lots of exercise. We did lots of jumping and then felt our heart beating fast and then slow as we rested. Some of the boys decided to carry on keeping fit after we had finished our lesson.
We finished the week by making fruit scones. They were delicious!
We have finished the term by learning the rhyme 'Hey Diddle Diddle'. We started the week by using small tools to make our own representations of the 'dish and the spoon'. The children created faces on both items and then used a variety of methods to join them together. We also went on a number hunt to find objects from the rhyme. The children were shown how to make tallies on their sheets and then set off around the garden on their treasure hunt. All of the children performed their favourite nursery rhyme in front of their friends and watched themselves on the interactive whiteboard after being recorded reciting one of the rhymes they had learnt.
The childen used magnets to explore materials that attract and repel. They began by exploring a range of objects in a tray and then got more adventurous, taking their magnets around the classroom to discover which objects were magnetic.
During free play there has been lots of interest in the small world toys. The children have wonderful imaginations and narrate their own stories whilst playing with these resources. In the construction area the boys buil a wall to keep 'the monster' out. They then, with support, found the letters on a sound mat and wrote' beware monster' to warn everyone else.
We finished the term with our whole school 'Manor Marathon'. The children were very enthusiastic about running the and contributing their laps to the schools total score and were very good at staying in the lanes marked out. We had lots of fun!!
This week the rhyme we have been learning is Jack and Jill. As the rhyme is about fetching water we have been doing lots of different activities using water. First we filled our pail up and experimented to find out which objects floated and which sank. We decided that the heavy ones sank to the bottom and the light ones floated. In Maths, we have been learning about capacity at the water tray and outside in the sand area. During carpet time we made some soup to make Jack feel better using full and half cup measurements from our recipe.
Some of us made Jack and Jill puppets to help us recite the rhyme and some of us made zig zag books to sequence the rhyme. We also worked together to make a 3D well for Jack and Jill to get their water from.
Our nursery rhyme this week is Hickory Dickory Dock. We have been very busy doing lots of work involving clocks. We have been improving our fine motor skills by cutting out the numbers and sticking them onto a clock face and we have made our own representations of grandfather clocks using shapes and other materials on the creative table.
For cooking this week we decided to make cheese straws as the children decided that mice liked to eat cheese. During the activity the children were learning to grate the cheese, cut, roll and twist the dough.
We also played 'What's the time Mr Mouse' and were very good at counting out the correct number of steps.
We talked about the mouse running up and down the clock and decided to see how fast our cars would run down the ramps whilst we played with the cars.
We also had some new teachers in our nursery this week. The children have been pretending to be the staff and showed a lot of interest in their lanyards. They then decided to make their own.
This week we have been learning about the festival of Chinese New Year. The children learnt the story about the twelve animals in the chinese zodiac and all agreed that the rat cheated to win the race. We also learnt a song about a chinese dragon. We found out that this year is the 'Year of the Rabbit' so we made sponge print pictures of rabbits. We also made chinese fans, lanterns and chinese drums.
On the maths table we have been using chopsticks to put the correct number of cubes into our numbered takeaway boxes
On the writing table we have been practicing our fine motor skills by writing our names on strips of paper and folding them to make a concertina for our chinese dragon's body.
We watched a video clip of the Dragon dance and decided to make our own dragon. The children worked together to paint and decorate a head and then added material to it to do their own dragon dance in the playground.
During free play we role played in the chinese restaurant and even the babies were eating noodles. On the computer we ordered numbers on the dragon. Although we had bad weather this did not stop us having fun in the sand area.
We finished the week by cooking our own noodles and using chopsticks to eat them with. After we had eaten we washed up our bowls and chopsticks.
This term our topic is 'Nursery Rhymes'. We began with learning the rhyme 'Humpty Dumpty'. We have been making different representations of Humpty Dumpty. Some of us made Get Well cards for Humpty on the writing table. We also made a large 3D Humpty Dumpty from cardboard boxes. then we decided to build his wall using the large contruction blocks.
We used pictures and small world resources to help us recite the rhyme to our friends.
We made soldier helmets so that we could help 'put Humpty together again'.
In maths we have been matching the number of dots on Humpty Dumpty's plasters to the correct numeral.
