Monday afternoon we had the opportunity to see the Year 6 performance. This was the first time they performed in front of an audience. It was great to see that the effort they've put in paid off by delivering a lovely show.
KS2 were also treated by watching another performance on Tuesday afternoon - Who wants to be an Olympian? This was a very interactive show teaching everyone about the Olympics through history! It was great fun! Many children had the opportunity to be part of the big show!
Wednesday afternoon it was our 'Home Learning Project' showcase. For this event we invited the parents to come and have a look at the amazing things we have been creating at home!
A lot of effort went into these projects and it was a fantastic way to show the independent work that has been going on at home.
Our week started by a visit to Eastlea Community School where we had a taster day of what it could be like in Secondary School. We did a range of lessons throughout the day. These included: Science, PE and Textiles. It was a great day!
Science was all about making rockets. Thinking about the shape of the nose and the size and shape of the fins. They were launched from the field - some went really far!
PE had two activities; Shotput and Athletics. In Shotput we aimed for different distances whereas in Athletics we ran 50m and 100m races.
During our textile session we could use felt, fabric scissors, thread and glue to make our own monster bookmarks.
What would your monster bookmark have looked like?
On Wednesday we had our big event at the Velodrome with Newham Music. We finally got to perform all the songs we were practising for so long!
Our voices were echoing throughout the velodrome. It was an exciting day! ~ Samiul
The band was really amazing! It was so loud it drowned out my voice! ~Hashim
It was a lovely experience watching all the schools coming together and singing along. ~Laiba
It was a breath-taking experience with everyone singing together beautifully. ~Ayeesha
Everyone was kind and it was lots of fun. It was also very loud! ~Kavahn
This week we continued to add the layers for our headdresses. The first layer was the most challenging as we had to create a base layer to build on.
Once our structures were layered with two layers of newsprint, we had to wait for it to dry. The next step in this process was adding on our colours. This time we used tissue paper, which was much more fragile than the newsprint.
It is slowly coming together...
It was also Sports Day this week. Even though we go interrupted by the rain, we still had loads of fun taking part in the different activities.
On Monday morning the Year 6's held their Enterprise Event where they sold items that they made in class for their businesses. The children were selling slime, two different types of bookmarks, lemonade and pencils with toppers.
On Wednesday we had Windrush Day. We looked at who the people are known as the Windrush Generation. At the end of the day we got to share what we have done with the Year 2's.
We learned more about how carnival came about and looked at Claudia Jones and the Notting Hill Carnival. From this, we started creating our own carnival headdresses.
It might not look like headdresses yet as there are still a lot of work that needs to be done. However, these are our basic structures. Now we need to start adding on the layers and additional features.
During Reading we continued discovering new information about the new boy at the back of the class - the refugee kid. Discussions were held in class about the different views that people have around refugees and why this might be. The narrator of the story is very persistent in becoming friends with Ahmet (the refugee kid) and had tonnes of questions she wanted to ask him. In class we came up with our own questions that we wanted to ask Ahmet.
We had a singing workshop with Newham Music in preparation for the Festival of Youth, which will take place on the 6th July in the Velodrome. This year’s annual showcase celebrating the musical young people of Newham will be the largest Festival of Youth to date - 2,000 young people coming together for an interactive and immersive performance at the Velodrome at the Queen Elizabeth Olympic Park!
Here are the songs we have been practising:
Our East London Home
Umbombela
Zadok the Priest
Baton theme
Hits of 2012
We Don’t Talk About Bruno
Some of the songs are quite tricky but we are getting the hang of it and are looking forward to take part in this festival.
In Maths we have now started on our new chapter - Decimals. We are applying all our previous knowledge of fractions and other work around number to help us understand decimal numbers.
In Science this week we looked at the different gestation periods of mammals (including humans). We plotted the information on a graph and then interpreted the graph by looking at the information it is showing us in order to help us draw general conclusions regarding the size/mass of mammals and their gestation periods.
The last half-term of the year is here. Can you believe it? It will probably be one of the busiest half-terms of the year, filled with learning and amazing learning opportunities.
We started reading The Boy at the Back of the Class and even in the very first lesson we were all intrigued by the empty chair at the back, the interesting teacher and the unknown boy.
We did work around the new characters that were introduced in the first chapter and identified the language the author used to convey meaning to us, the readers.
Our English text is based around
The Nowhere Emporium.
A magical shop, sparkling lights and a white dove.
Just reading the prologue has got us at the edge of our seats...
On Wednesday we had visitors from BCLP and Young Enterprise. Children in Year 5 and 6 completed different activities around businesses.
The first activity was to work in teams to run their own business. We learned that a business is an organisation where people work together using different skills to make and or sell products or services. Other people (sometimes other businesses) buy the products and services. The word business comes from the word busy, and means doing things!
We looked at global trade and that businesses exist around the world. Sometimes they sell products to customers (people or businesses) in other countries. We rely heavily on global trade for many elements of our life. The children worked in groups to find examples of imported items in the classroom.
With our new business knowledge, each group were given a country. USA, Mexico and France were the countries we got. Each team had a business in that country, making shapes to sell to the UK. Each country had resources to make the shapes, but some countries had more resources than others. Only goods of a high quality could be sold to the UK. Each country started with an amount of money to buy extra resources. Ones goods were sold it was important to bank the money as any extra money on the table, once the game was finished, was not added to the total savings in the bank.
The next activity in the afternoon was all focused around designing your own restaurant. Children looked at possible success factors for a restaurant:
•Location
•Atmosphere
•Quality of service
•People
Each of these sections were discussed in further detail, helping the children think about their own restaurant.
Children then designed their own restaurants. There was a sharing event where each child had to deliver a short presentation about their restaurant.
Have a look at a few of the lovely restaurant ideas they came up with.
Who knows, maybe one day one of these restaurants become a reality...
