For our Manor Experiences we held a Challenge Fundraiser. Each class had their own challenges they took part in. There was a lot of cheering, fun and laughter.
Painting nails, plaiting hair, racing with balloons, cracking eggs and eating biscuits were only some of the activities for the day.
It is Children's Mental Health Week and we kicked the week off by watching an assembly by Place2Be thinking about our own emotional goals and strategies to support us reaching these goals.
It was Internet Safety day on Tuesday. As a class we looked at the reason behind Safer Internet Day and in Year 5 specifically focused on chatting online. As a class we discussed positive and negative conversation starters as well as how to approach these. The children each made their own fortune teller / chatterbox thinking about different conversation starters and responses.
As part of Children's Mental Health Week they took part in a workshop completing different activities and strategies around Mental Health.
In our Science lesson we started looking at air resistance; the role it plays and the effect gravity has on objects. We tested whether objects of the same mass, but different shape will hit the ground at the same time or not. Children then discussed what would have happened if the same test was carried out on the moon.
In English we started our new poetry text: The Highwayman. We spent a couple of days looking at the shape of the poem by Alfred Noyes, familiarising ourselves with the story. As part of one of our Experience Day's we looked at other highwaymen. It was really interesting to find out where they got their names from as well as what led them to become highwaymen.
Swimming, swimming and more swimming! What a tiring week!
It is that time again...
Could you guess it? SWIMMING!
Year 5's have been working really hard becoming more confident in the water; improving their skills and swimming techniques. The children are making great progress.
Let's see what happens in the second week of swimming...
Sir Isaac Newton was the focus of our Science lesson. He developed his theory of gravity when he saw an apple fall to the ground from an apple tree.
The force of gravity acting on an object is measured in Newtons (N).
In class we used the force meters to measure the weight of different objects in Newtons.
Another exciting week in Year 5 Maths. From defining multiples, factors and common factors of numbers to prime and composite numbers. Different numbers were explored to find their factors. We learned that prime numbers are bigger than one and only has two factors; 1 and itself.
That was not the end of our exploration. Counters were used to visually help us find which numbers are square numbers.
Reading on the Manor Bus is always fun!
What are you currently reading?
Because we will study the Ancient Egyptian civilisation, it is important to understand how it fits in with what was happening both in Britain and in other parts of the world.
It was a big task ordering and remembering significant events and dates of different Ancient Civilisations.
We used a world map to identify the civilisations.
Our English for Spring Term starts with the narrative 'The Present'. A short animation film created by Jacob Frey. The film is about a young boy who seems to prefer his computer games to anything else. Nothing can seem to drag him away. Until his mother leaves him a gift - an adorable puppy. The boy thinks the puppy is cool until he realises that the puppy has a leg missing. He is such a cruel little boy. Gradually, the puppy's determination wins him round and they go out to play... at this point we see why the boy may have been adverse to having a puppy with three legs.
As one of our Experience Days we had a large cardboard box, similar to what Ben experienced.
We had discussions around what we think he was hoping for and why mum was so anxious about him always playing computer games.
During Friday's reading, we decided to tell each other about the books we are currently reading and then had the opportunity to read to each other.
In Reading, we read Chapter 5 of Below Deck: A Titanic Story.
In this chapter, Grace lead Catherine to safety; finding her way out of the maze of corridors back to the main deck. The girls managed to find their way to a lifeboat but Grace is stopped from boarding due to her class. Catherine speaks to her father and finally Grace is allowed onto the lifeboat. From the lifeboat, they watched as the Titanic sank.
We evaluated what it meant to be a different class of passenger in 1912 and whether it was fair that only certain passengers were allowed on a lifeboat.
This week surprised us with not just one, but two experience days in English to support us with the narrative 'The Present'. We had two cute puppies coming to visit us. They were very excited and playful, just like the puppy in the short animation film.
We linked our 'Meeting a Puppy' experience with the FANTASTIC rainbow that we use in class for writing and answered some questions regarding the adorable pups.
As a hook lesson, we used an Ancient Egyptian app on the iPods. There was a lot of information that we had to learn.
When pointing to the correct place on the page, we were able to discover more about Egypt.
We cracked some Egyptian messages using the Egyptian Hieroglyphs.
Everyone wrote their name using the Egyptian Hieroglyphs.
